Dear Split Bus enthusiasts,
I purchased a 63 Crew Cab some weeks ago.
It seems to be in good overall condition but to bring it back on the road I need to install a hazard flasher switch.
In Germany, where I live, this was mandatory from 1970 on. That means, that in my home country there seems to be no spilt buses with an original hazard flasher switch on the dashboard.
If my info is correct, a hazard flasher warning was needed in the US from 1966 on, so there have to be some buses, that have that switch right from the factory delivery.
If there are any 1966 buses still driving around, that have that switch as an original equipment, I would be happy to see some fotos from the dashboard, that show the correct switch and most important the correct positioning.
Thanks a lot in advance
Kind regards
Hans |

What month and model is your bus?? VW installed at the factory starting in the 1963 model year E-flashers for USA. Should not be hard to wire up same in a Euro destined bus.
VW also offered a E-flasher kit as a dealer accessory before 1963. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Thanks a lot, Eric for that fast and valuable hint.
That ´s exactly what I need to install the switch properly. How to wire is not the main problem but I wanted to know the exact dashboard location of the switch.
My Crew Cab is from April 1964 and was delivered to Austria.
Kind regards

Thanks a lot for the wiring diagram !
It seems that I have to options. To use the new "combi" relay or use an extra relay just for the hazard flasher function.
Am I right with that ?
Any recommendations are deeply appreciated ! |

Have you considered on mounting the switch under either the dash or package tray? Easy to get to and no hacking of the dash required.
Would be easier to use a separate relay instead of the later bus 9 pin relay. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Interesting, when was your DC built? Was it built for an other-than-US market?
For the case at hand, I'm wondering how hard it would be to wire two inline relays along with two powered flashers without affecting the factory harness. The turning-on of a switch could activate relays further downstream from the fusebox- and draw "flashed" power for the lights (maybe). It would be the same as tapping into a parking light wire to have foglights come on only when the park lights are on, but it would instead be using R and L park wires. Someone smarter than me (both of you) need(s) to tell me I'm crazy. _________________

Excellent, guys !
thats exactly what I will need to install the new switch in its original position.
I will choose a switch with the indicator light built in, so I will not have to cut a huge hole in the dashboard next to the wiper switch.
May I kindly ask for another favour ? If those of you that have the original factory installed hazard switch could take a calliper to measure the distance between the two switches (draw the switches and gauge the two distances (the inner and the outer distance of the metal pins).
That information would make my work so much easier.
Thanks a lot all of you for your fast and really useful support so far ! |

Quick question...
Just tackling the disaster area that is the wiring on my double cab... a '64...
So, it has no emergency flasher switch but the '63 wiring diagram her in the technical section does... should I just follow the '61 diagram which has no emergency flasher?
thanks in advance.

Should have the E-flasher system. Does it have a second hole for the switch to the right of the speedo, or if you finger up front of the dash is there a lump from the DPO sealing off the hole for that switch?
If it does not, maybe consider wiring in the E-flasher system and have the switch up under the dash out of sight so you can flip it on for the occasion you need them. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Go with the "Non-USA" 1963 version. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I installed the usa hazard switch into a european 1964 vw bus. The extra screw mounting hole below the curve of the dash that holds the switch will already be there. You just have to make the hole for the switch body through the front of the dash. I dont regret this at all since I have used the hazards several times. Getting rear ended isnt as much fun as it used to be. _________________ Waiting for santa to drop off funky green. I can wish can't I???? |

YUP.
I am going to wire one in then... might as well when tidying up everything...
As the bus has already been made 12v I think using '67 12v components will make most sense, and be easier to buy. It also looks much simpler to wire in...
But another question, as my bus is now in the UK, I cant have the bake lights and turn signals using the same bulb, and I am running a dedicated wire from the switch to my new euro light units which was easy and works great... but looking at the '67 wiring diagram the brake light cable goes to the hazard relay...
will it be ok to simply leave this off?
edit***
actually, having seen the price of the 9 pin unit... I think I will make do with a £3 12v relay... _________________ 1954 L227 Type 113
