It even kinda makes a VW emblem, maybe you can enhance upon it with some more sheet metal. |
I do still have about half a sheet left! |

looking good!
I would swap the fuel and oil temp gauges. RPM, oil pressure, and oil temp are (in my opinion) the most important to see in a quick glance down.
I need to get back to work you're moving way faster than I am _________________ it's more fun loud and dirty |

Well it's done for now, need to cut the hole for the radio and dummy lights and what ever switches I decide to put in it. Still need to figure all that out but gauge holes are there and fit gauges, after I buy the other 3 I can decide on final arrangements of the small ones.
and yeah you might want to get after it if you wanna be done before me..... |

Just about done with the fenders, after a light coat of primer I can see a few spots that need attention. Also started dressing up the new dash, gonna be a little eaiser than the fenders I think. Ordered some indicator light and switches today too, think they are gonna look purdy good too. Dang just realized I jumped ahead a bit, forgot to cut the hole for the radio before I started the filler work....oh well won't be to hard to do.

Well I don't think I like doing fiberglass cloth and resin, this is a messy process and it seems I lack any technique at all for this. Hope it turns out ok. |

Before you spend too much effort on getting a beautiful fit along the flange, keep in mind the arc of the hood as you tilt it open. _________________ Richard

should not be an issue, the sides sorta hang out and are floppy if you know what I mean so they clear everything when opening and closing the hood. The problem was an uneven gap on the sides when it was closed and the sides pushed in as they would be when latched in place, which I still need to figure out how I am going to secure the sides so they don't flop around. |

Wow, I lost some serious momentum, I kinda stalled out on the build a bit. Almost ready for paint just a few spots to attend too, right now I am holding until the 3rd week in July to Paint. I am picking up a new project bike on July 11th and will paint it to match the bug so want to only set up the paint booth once if I can and also saves on paint since it will already be in the gun! |

I hear ya on setting up for blasting. I just did a new bumper for the baja yesterday and I was hoping to do that along with a grill/smoker I was repainting. Unfortunately, as luck would have it my sand blaster nozzle took a dump halfway thru the bumper. Oh well. What's new?
Look forward to seeing some paint soon _________________ Brian H.

Here's the way I latch the hood on mine:
They are like a "draw latch" available from McMaster Carr and such places.

I also have 3/8" hood pins in the cowl to keep it aligned. Be sure you put a rubber washer on the pins to seal out rain and other water.

Glad I started this thread, I forgot half of what I had done. I am still about in the same spot I was, just a lot of shit happened this year so trying to get back on track soon. I have built a motorcycle and boat so the bug got put to the side while that was going on but after reading this whole thread again I am getting the itch back..... |

Only update so far is my Divorce was final in January
I have a new Motorcycle and a boat that got me sidetracked along with the divorce and junk, but not to fear I am getting back on track, have started dating a tall blonde nurse so my creative side is waking back up and I am ready to get back out in the shop. |

Trying out this new photo add stuff. This is what I came up with my side latch for the flip front end, it's a draw latch I took off of a military storage box I had. I welded the mating tab in place then will still need to drill a couple holes and bolt the wing tab part to the fiberglass.
I am sure nobody remembers but this is just to keep the sides from flapping in the wind, I have two large locking hood latches on the top to keep it down. I will add more pics soon and kinda give a brief refresher of my build with photos before I get full sped back into this.....well maybe half speed this time. |
