Who knew Ralph Kramden drove a notch?
Looks like Ed Norton is checking the rally map. |

and I guess the notch cabrio is pretty cool too. |
We've got a notch cabrio, a Pagoda-era Mercedes SL, and behind them what appears to be a split-window VW single cab. Yeah I'll take all 3 please! |
Interesting things going on here. Maybe I am too nit- picky.
First, the Pagoda means that this pic could have been taken no earlier than June of 1963, long after VW decided it wasn't going there on the 1500 Cabrio so why would they put it out there?
Second... I have my doubts that the Notch Cabrio is real. Supposedly, there were only a few prototypes made and these are at Wolfsburg- yet the Cabrio is wearing what appears to be a Cologne "civilian" license plate. It also appears to lack side markers. Wonder if what appears to be a Cabrio is a special made parade or pace car? |
I think it's real. The info is here on The Samba somewhere, but that Notch cabrio was used in other parades as well. |
Possibly, but what I'm saying is that if it is one of the Wolfsburg notches, why does it have a Cologne plate and not a WOB? Also, if memory serves, a car owned by a dealer or manufacturer has a different style plate. |
Stumbled across this posting today and just want to get it straight:
Yes, it's a real Cabriolet. Very likely VIN 0000061, which has been sold to VW Großhändler Fleischhauer in Cologne. Fleischhauer used several Type 3 and Type 34 convertibles in parades. I have a few (private) pictures showing those cars.
After VW decided not to build the convertibles, a bunch of prototypes was offered and sold to some outstanding VW Großhändler ("wholesaler" or "districr seller" - I am not sure about the correct translation). So the story is not as mysteriously as people tell...
I was able to track the vert on the picture down to his last owner who wrecked it in the late 70ies (or early 80ies). |
