I've driven on this test track, located on the Wolfsburg R&D center premises. Though that was in the early 1980's, in Rabbits (Golf I) when I worked in the R&D center. Strange feeling, being up on the top lane at speed in the two full curves of the oval-shaped track, looking over out the right window and seeing the ground! You have to drive a minimum speed so that the centrifugal force prevents the car from falling over in the curve in the top lane. At a certain speed you can even let go of the steering wheel and the car will stay in the lane. Once you exceed that speed you have to steer the car. If you try to lift your leg off the floor at that point in the curve you notice that it's significantly "heavier" due to the centrifugal force exerting downward (through the floor) into the track.
The T3 at far right has not reached the "free steering" speed, since it is leaning slightly to the left. When you reach that particular equilibrium speed, the suspension is compressed evenly and the car would be parallel to the pavement. The T3 at the back is at that speed; note how the body is parallel to the pavement. The lower speed was done for ease of photography. |
