Hi, I'm a long time water-cooled Volkswagen owner who's decided to take the plunge into my first air-cooled. I searched around and found one local to me for a pretty decent deal. 1 73 Westfalia with manual transmission and no engine, 1 73 Transporter for parts with automatic transmission and 1 1.7L? pancake engine pulled from the transporter. The whole lot for $600.
My goal at this point is to just get the Westy on the road and then possibly start restore it at some point.
Where I found them.
Some bad rust
Starting to clean it up.
Interior
The engine
So some questions are should I look for a flywheel, clutch and pressure plate to put this in with the existing Westy transmission or am I better off taking all the auto transmission parts from the Transporter and puting them on the Westy.
My researching leads me to believe I need a 210mm flywheel, clutch and pressure plate.
And yes I already bought one of these

Hiya, Considering you're way up north, you got a nice deal. Take your time and read all you can about these beasts. You have a progressive intake on that engine, seriously consider returning to the original PDSIT carbs with chokes, as you will have heating/icing issues. The heater is a nice plus. Do you have any flywheel or anything clutchwise on that? As far as going 4 speed or auto, auto is a bit more problematic as far as figuring out the correct setup and finding parts. Not that it can't be done. The rust issues absolutely need dealing with, tho getting it running is a great boost, tho that engine may need work. Lots of help here, use the search links to find repair threads. Fortunately, it is all sheetmetal, so learning repairs is not too bad, and parts are not too expensive, not cheap mind you, but within reach.
Right off, stop or slow down the rust any way you can, spray it with oil if you have to. Use the winter to read up and plan your attack.
Best of luck, following you.... |

I rebuilt my automatic transmission, and it's a pretty cool experience driving a bus without a stick shift! That said, it is also difficult to find parts for the early 003 style automatic transmissions. The later 010 style auto is more common.
I would seriously consider the structural repairs and bodywork before entertaining any thoughts to the power train. And that Type 4 engine has no business being installed in its current condition. But, I would digress. Know that I am completely jealous of your total score! |

Whats the difference between the standard intake and the one that's on the engine now?
No the original engine with the flywheel etc got caught in a fire at a dealers back in the 80's when it was getting rebuilt. |

that intake is for a single carb without a way to preheat it tou will struggle with icing and poor performance that motor should have dual carbs-pdsit's
nice looking bus though I dig that interior _________________ '69 Westfalia Camper~Cassidy

So I guess my list of parts I should acquire are
210mm Flywheel.
210mm clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing.
stock dual carb intake/carbs. |

You're catching on quick! If you want a new disc, you can easily use a 215mm which will fit tho it'll be a tad tight getting in, and is a lot cheaper than a 210 disc. Get to know klassicfab and Gerson for sheet metal. I hope you know how to weld! |

Thanks for all the help guys. Yeah I've already found Klasscfab, and monkeynutVW. Good to hear the recommendations tho.
I've never welded so we'll see how it goes. Might pay someone to weld for me.
I need inner, middle and outer rockers on both sides in the middle section of the bus. I also need to repair/replace the sliding door track as it has several holes in it.
Would these do the trick to switch my intake to dual?
and then a set of 34pict carbs? |

Pulled out a parts/donor bus.
Looks like the carb sitting in the rear
crusty engine
Now I can pull the engine apart I suppose and start rebuilding it all.
Looks like it needs a fair bit of TLC. |

Estacaco- That'll buff out! Totally rebuild that. Lots of good stuff there, along with a heater. Getting harder and harder to find restorable Bays, quickly becoming like splits. Please don't chop it up.
Where are you? |

I admit it's going to break my heart to chop it up but it's much cheaper for me than buying panels.
I was told selling the heaters might get me some extra coin tho lol.
I'm in Dryden, Ontario Canada. North western portion of Ontario. Right in between Thunder Bay Ontario and Winnipeg Manitoba. |

I'm guessing those two big pipes on either side of the engine are for my heating?

Yes, but those are useless-trash. The heater in the engine compartment puts out a good amount of heat, if it is in good shape. Sorry to hear you have to chop it up. Aren't there any in the junk yards up there? |

Unfortunately no there isn't. These are the only two even for sale I could find in a 4 hour east/west direction. I'm hoping I can make one working heater out of the two. |
