Next month will mark 10 years since we lost our son to bone cancer. The guts he displayed through the worst pain imaginable, while facing the inevitable, was a life changing lesson for our family.

My Mother lost her battle to Cancer, she actually died from an infection from a sore due to her weakened immune system from Chemo.
She was 84 years old and spent only 3 days with Hospice at home with my father.
They were married for 64 years and had a deep respect and love for each other.
Her battle was 2 1/2 years and went down hill quickly in 3 weeks, she is in a better place and will always be in my heart and all she knew. My father will have the hardest time with it but we'll help him through.
Life is precious, enjoy it.

Sorry for your loss Stacy, this will be a very tough part in your life. I have gone from tears daily, to 4 four times a week, now it just comes in waves, knocks me down, but thinking of my Dad helps in so many ways.
Hang in there.

Sorry to hear of your dad, Tom. At least you got to know your dad. Mine passed when he was only 38 yr... I was in 4th grade.

I have a close friend lose a fight to cancer too lately. We were at bedside to see her go.

When it was a 'spot' and taken care of the first time, there should have been follow ups to check your dad's 'markers', were there not? The markers are watched for so they will indicate if it ever comes back -if at all.

My friend kept it to herself when her markers showed up. I guess she got tired of fighting. But it was a brave fight.

But when it did come and several places have them -that is what is called a 'mets' or metastases.

Take care, man.

Yes, he had the follow ups, then in the spring of 2014, they cut the dose from monthly to bi-monthly on the meds to keep the cancer away, it came back HARD. We think he was aware & just let it go, wanted to be done with it, I don't think he would have gone the Chemo route, he knew his kids would help take care of his wife, our Mom.....

Wow Tom that hits close to home. I was diagnosed with Melanoma in 2006. They removed it from my left cheek. It was caught at an early enough stage (in-situ) so they were able to hack it out. Have to go in every six months to get my whole body checked. Scary shit.

My Dad is currently fighting Lymphoma.

Cancer sucks.

Looks like you have many great memories.

I rarely visit this part of the forum, but I figured today would be a good day to recognize the 18th anniversary of my Mother's passing. After a long 10 year battle she passed away at around 3:30pm on this day in 1997, just shy of 44 years old. Being 13 years old at the time, I never thought that this funeral notice would be completely intact and stored 6" from the clock radio on my headboard 18 years later:

On the plus side, less than 2 months from now I will be celebrating the 10 year milestone since I was diagnosed with the same hereditary cancer and chromosome mutation...and two days after that I turn 32. Kinda crazy when I stop and actually take a second to process it all.

Tom, I'm really sorry to hear of your loss. Your Dad will always be with you - never forget that.

I lost my wonderful Mum in 2008 to lung cancer - she was 54 years old. The strength she showed throughout I just couldnt comprehend. Personally, I dont know if you ever truly get over these things rather, just learn to live with them a little easier as time goes by maybe.

Take care of yourself Tom.

I may be facing this soon as well.

When my dad was a boy he got a case of ringworm on his head. In those days, the treatment was shaving the patient's head and radiation.

Now 77, he has multiple myeloma, and has had it about seven years. he's been told this is a direct result of his childhood experience.

Just found out yesterday that after years of remission it's suddenly gotten very aggressive. My dad always puts a positive spin on everything but my mom got on the phone and informed me that this is pretty serious now. they're doing IV chemo next week and a follow up a couple weeks later.

A few weeks ago, my dad fell down the basement steps. He caught himself on the banisters but wrenched something in his upper back. The next day he planted a bunch of trees in the back yard. Rolling Eyes his pain got worse and worse, but in spite of that decided to go ahead with a two week Western US tour with an aunt and uncle including a visit here with us in Oregon.

I never saw my dad looking so bad. It was a shock. He found out- after he got back- that he's got four cracked vertebrae. They wanted to do fusion but they can't because of his anemia that's a result of the myeloma.

here's a guy that's always been the baddest of badasses- football scholarship for college, weightlifter, runner... my last visit there two years ago he chopped and split a cord of fire wood by hand, loaded it up in the pickup, brought it home like he was anything but 75 years old. He was still working up till this spring, too.

Cancer sucks. Crying or Very sad

I'm so sorry to hear of all your losses... I'm new to this site, just joined today. my dad passed away last month from brain cancer and I miss him so much. I was surprised to see all these different random topics on this page and started clicking through and came across this one.

My dad and I got a 1974 super beetle sun bug way back when I was 15 and were slowly restoring it together. Well, I had the bright idea to join the Army when I turned 18 and left; went to Iraq and Afghanistan and all that fun stuff. Over the years we always worked on it together; he showed me how to weld and all sorts of other things. It was always our thing, our car. Well he was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2013 and passed away last month. Earlier this year I took the car to Olsen's VW in Tampa to have it finished up. Well it'll be done next month and I hate that he wasn't able to see it done. I'm kind of scared to go pick it up without him Crying or Very sad

He was such a great guy, the best person I've ever known, kind to everybody and was such a sweet and caring dad, I miss him so much

sorry for all the rambling :/ cancer SUCKS

Here's a picture of us before I took it to Tampa to finish the resto.

Sorry to hear you lost your father. It has to be tough, especially with him not being able to see you pick up your completed bug. I bet he'll be there in spirit and be proud of you for getting it all finished up and on the road.

Welcome to The Samba and post pictures of your baby when you get it back.

P.S., thank you for your service. Very Happy

I agree, post pictures of your sunbug when you get it back. I'm sure your father would have been so proud, thank you for sharing your story.

It's almost a year since I lost my father in law to lung cancer. I miss him dearly. F - you cancer!

So Thanksgiving weekend @ my Folks house, my son bought my Dad's last Hot Rod, dad was a Gear head in North Jersey in the 1950s, taught us all how to wrench on cars, as I taught my kids.
So my son bought Dad's 2000 Ford F350 SuperDuty Diesel, 7.3 5 spd 2wd truck, it is a BEAST, you can tow a freaken house w/it !! My son was pumped, he is an Engineer, as was my Dad, he has many memories of cruising to the N.J. beach in it ( he was 12 when my Pops bought it) He is really happy to have a Auto heratige iteam from his Grandad. So this will go well w/ his Audi A5 coupe, a 1980 Rabbit Diesel truck, and a '92 Corrado that he put a TDI in, his girlfriend said he's just like his Dad... Embarassed

I still get hit w/waves of emotion, but I just think it means Dad is still here w/ me.
We have done a ton of work at the Family homestead, new Oil Tank, new Roof, cleared out the cellar & painted it, sort thru the attic, tons of Scout things donated, tools stored & shared w/ the family as needed, yearly leaf raking/removal, one of his former Scouts plows the driveway for my Mom,will not take any $$, had a guy resurface the Chimney top, another took down some trees, both former Scouts, again, no charge. It strikes me that before he passed, he never asked for help, but now I fell w/ should offered it more often ??

Hug The ones you LOVE.

I buried a few good people to this cruel disease and it is unfair.

Wishing good health to all of us
