Parallel tasks...
While I'm waiting for paint prep to dry I'm starting on some sound deadening/insulation.
I've bought a bulk roll of rubberised, silverised, 3mm thick underlay/insulation/sound deadening material. It cuts easily, lies flat nicely and will act as a good underlayer in various locations. First was to cut a piece for under the cabin floor mat. Not much to say about the task, but seems good!

Wow!
I actually feel like I've made a bit of progress today, unlike the endless days footering about that I seem to have done recently! Rolling Eyes
First thing was easy. Using the hardboard/Masonite floor as a template, I cut some insulation material as underlay. There's a rectangular recess where the vent used to be, so I cut two layers of dynamat type sound deadening to fill the gap. This doesn't need huge amounts, so I'm going to put small sections in a few different places.

Then, terrifyingly, I had to cut Lino to shape. I only had a piece big enough for one go at it, so measure twice etc! Shocked
Managed to get it to fit pretty well, and Shona and I are very happy with the age appropriate 'retro' look of it! Very Happy The edges are held in place by bits of cabinetry, and the entry step 'grip rod', which I polished up a little. Mad

During all of this, I had a couple of trips out to collect Lino etc from the garage, beautiful day, took a pic!
Last up was creating a platform for the fridge, to replace the rotten one. Still need to tack on a shallow bar to stop the fridge shifting and secure the vent tubes, but nearly there! Razz

You're nearly right Gil! It's been a frustrating year, but we have a camping trip organised with friends in Northumberland in September. Very Happy It's right after we get home from our 'conventional' summer holiday, so I'm just aiming to have the Kombi ready before we depart in mid-August.

Nothing like a bit of fiddling while Rome burns though...
Sometimes you just do a job because you fancy it, and tapping a thread for a 3mm set screw in the fridge flue pipe was my 'relaxation' for this evening!
Fiddly, but satisfying.

Cracking on apace now! Today I repaired the fixing points of the low cupboard under the rock and roll bed, and while I was under there, put a few more strategic sound deadening pads.
Also, cut some more underlay to go under the rear bed mattress.

It's a gorgeous day today and I needed to go out to the garage to pick up some things. On the way back I stopped for pics as the thread has been a bit too heavy on boring interior repairs, and not enough castles and country houses! Very Happy
There's a travelling funfair on the village green this week too...

Exciting moment!
The fridge, which has been out for about six months, having an intermittent clean/refurb/paint, finally gets its door back on! Very Happy
Sadly, I can't find the door lock fittings at the moment, but I thought I'd record the event for posterity!
Couldn't find a good 'before' picture, other than this first one, but believe me, it's an awful lot better than it was! Wink

Shona is going out in Edinburgh tonight, so I took her to the station. We both agreed that the sound deadening and insulation has made a big difference! Worth the effort! Cool
I stopped to admire the view on the way home, and of course the Kombi sneaked into the pictures! The Forth estuary was as still as a millpond, and you can see the distinctive shape of Arthur's Seat in the middle of Edinburgh in the distance.

Along this part of the coast there are many collections of concrete blocks. People often say they were to stop the Germans landing during the war, but actually this area was used as a Military exercise area and firing range. Still during WWII, but there aren't enough to stop the Germans! You can see them in the foreground of some of these pictures...

I've taken advantage of the evening alone to finish some things. The cooker cabinet was a bugger to make secure and have the gas connections meet up. It's ended up with three M8 coach bolts through the base panel and the floor, and wood screws to secure the panel to the cabinet. Seems solid now, but took ages to do. As did the doors for the two cupboards you see as you look in the slider. It would have helped if I'd labelled which components were left and which were right! Embarassed
Worked 'till it got dark, guess what I had for dinner? Very Happy

Mostly smaller jobs now (at least in theory!)
The Kombi, as you might imagine, has Australian spec 240v outlets. This is generally fine, as we have an Australian kettle lead and the fridge has an Aussie plug. The electric heater though, has a UK plug, and we occasionally have other things to plug in and we end up with an ugly (and dangerous!) profusion of adapters and trailing wires! Embarassed
There was no great place to tap into the main power cable, so I've used a junction box and wired in an extension cable with two UK outlets on it. It can stay in the cupboard, but it's there if we need it.

There were two unfinished holes in the dash, from where an aftermarket gauge had been fitted and removed. I had some little 'fir tree' plugs that I was using for something else, and they fit perfectly! No more ugly screw holes! Very Happy

Thanks Gil, very kind!
Of course, when you've done the work yourself, you only see the bits that aren't quite right, but I'm happy with it and hopefully it'll buy a few years before 'proper' repairs to the cabinets are needed! Wink

I'm pleased to report that my amateur gasfitting efforts seem to have worked. No leaks apparent in the connections, testing with glycerine and soapy water and foam, and as an added precaution, leaving the pipes under pressure and the Kombi closed up didn't produce any gas smell in the lockers where the cooker and fridge shutoff taps are.
I do think we'll be a bit more careful about turning off the gas bottle at night though. I've now read too many horror stories online as research for the gas lines! Shocked

I know exactly how you feel about the stuff that isn't quite right. My restoration bugs me already and I don't even drive it yet. lol

My heater pod cables have been a bit out of adjustment since someone (ahem! Embarassed ) cut one of them a little too short. I have a replacement, but I thought I would try a temporary repair. The inner wire basically just needed to be extended, so I used an electrical connector block to act as a 'domino' connector. Seems to work!

I was putting back the cardboard glovebox, and I notched that it has a part number stamped on the bottom edge. No big deal, but might be useful if someone's looking for an original replacement! 211 857 101A
The hole in the box is where an old kill switch was. I'm planning on putting a 12v socket there instead.
I also decided to put some adhesive backed foam strip between the retaining strap and the cardboard to stop it cutting in. Other tasks tonight we're fixing the VW emblem back on the front panel. God, the replacement clips are tight! I had to beat them with a hot air gun to get the emblem to clip in!

Ha ha! I mean 'heat' of course, I think I prefer the autocorrect version! Very Happy
