March 63 RHD Notch

Rust! fortunately its surface only in the main, I don't really want to blast it as sand is a pain to clean up afterwards plus i don't have the equipment , so powertools and elbow grease at the ready, along with some chemicals.

I think i will probably have to cut some parts away to repair the worst parts.

The right side inner wing area is worse than the left except for the vent/drain/duct.

Somewhere in the cars past an attempt was made to wax protect it, unfortunately it was not done very well, so some areas are showing original primer whereas others show deep pitting. Hey ho.

NO sandblasting is drastic buy doable. You might as well finish the welding,wire wheel the flakey stuff & brush on MasterSeries etc silver and black on both sides. It should look good for another 40 years!

Even though its freezing cold in the cave, i've managed a bit more

The rusty hole looks a bit better once its been cleaned off, treated and zinc primed.

The other side turned out similar.

Did this too, LH C pillar inner

its also been treated and primed.

Next is the last remaining bad bit, RH rear inner wing and base of C pillar

However this should fix most of it, it just need a bit of modifying to be age correct and then its spot weld removal time.

Thanks Bob, i'm getting there slowly. Plan is to try and have the shell ready for paint by summer, so i'm trying to keep motivated and keep going.

Time to start on the RH rear inner wing repair.
First drill out loads of spot welds.
Seeing as how the top rear most part was ok i decided to leave it in situ.

here it is, removed.

Bit of modification required to make them the same year wise.

As expected some surface inside, but also some rot.

Nothing that can't be fixed though, with a bit of patience.

Good progress! Just curious as to what you are using to treat the metal before you prime it? I've just bought the POR 15 metal etch, but I think it's all pretty much the same -phosporic acid.

Hi Bob, i use POR15 metal prep, its probably the same stuff you use. Whether its any use, only time will tell. Obviously i remove as much surface rust as possible before application. Any deep rust/rot i always cut out.
No more progress today as the pub was more important, plus its cold outside. More to follow.

You can definitely tell that's a RHD car, as LHD cars seem to rust like that on the left side.

Its been awhile since i was on here, sorry for the slackness but work has been getting in the way, although on my latest trip to Indy, harbor freight had shrinker/stretchers on sale at what worked out as less than £100 for the pair so had to have one. Made my suitcase so heavy that the TSA opened it up and left their calling card, got them home safely though.

So i was starting to repair the last big rusty part of the shell.
I had removed the inner wing panel which revealed the expected rust but some was not very accessible so i removed some more bits.

repaired the other part of the duct with the flappy bit, ready for reinstallation

And modified the big repair panel to look more age correct, not the best repair but i'm no pro.

and last one for now i finally cut out the inner part of the C panel ready to fix. It was very rusty but the seatbelt anchor piece is reuseable.

Whilst i am on here, lower front seatbelt mounts, anyone got pictures of theirs, my car had two point belts with no mounting point on the floor/ channel area, where should they actually be mounted, on the floor pan or heater channel?

My day job has been getting in the way once more so have not updated this for a while.
Here's a short update on the continuing RH rear corner repairs, if any one is actually following this.
This area is super complicated to replicate due to all the different panels, all of which have some form of tricky curve involved.

First picture shows the number of panels i had to repair/fabricate for this area

Duct area repaired and reinstalled with some gash welding i might add, although the side you will be able to see is neat

Upper boot area had rusted through so a small repair was needed here too

Couple of views of the gutter area repairs, this part seems to have taken for ever, mainly because i had nothing to work too except trying to copy the other side, which appears to be completely rust free.

Its coming together slowly and looks a million times better than it did.
More next week, hopefully i should be in a position to nail the big piece on.

The seat belt mount/nut is on or inside the heater channel at the bottom of the B pillar. There is another mount high on the B pillar for 3 point seat belts. They didn't come with seat belts until 1967.

Finally after weeks of faffing about and ten different repair pieces the rear corner repair is on.

The visible bits i tried to replicate the original arrangement, the hidden bits dont matter too much. Just needs a small filler skim to complete

Inner C pillar repaired just needs grinding down once the parcel shelf corner piece is in.

Unfortunately after digging around a bit i found more rot, this time in the front corner of the inner wing and the body mount. So two steps forward two back.

Going to try and repair this, wish me luck.

Glad i removed this as there is some surface rust inside the box, but its fixable.

Well the RH C post repair is done finally, looks ok , if i say so myself, outside and inside, certainly looks better than before and is rot free now.

I also made a start on the RH rear body mount, i made a couple of repair panels to be let in later.

I'm away to Indy once again on monday for two weeks, so no progress for a bit but will post when i'm back on it.
Not much welding left now on the body, pan is next, which is actually pretty good.
