Was able on tue to get some welding gas over night loan and finish up the rear mounts. Man people are so nice! Anyways handed over the borrowed welder back to it owner and can't thank him enough. I have a junky one that is fine for thin stuff just needed it for the frame and braces etc. So now on to what I have done.
Bead rolling.. What can you do with a bead roller? Why you can make a cover for the hole your going to cut in the tunnel.
I know its not much but it took a lot of trial and error to get it so it looked decent.
I am going to cut a hole right here. I am not sure what I am going to secure it but I was thinking threaded revit nuts or uclips.
So got the tar mat off somewhat and now will prob clean it up later. I am getting tired of running out of gas in the bug as it has only a 1 gallon tank. So will prob run the much needed fuel line to the front.
All for now. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

My 7 yr old Elsa loves to help on the bug so we vacuumed out the tar paper stuff I finally pulled off the tunnel to cut the hole.
This is what I found in the tunnel. I did not expect to find it but it was packed in pretty well. So if you find a bug in a field check the tunnel those buggers get everywhere! I don't even know how they got in there.
I am def going to have to treat the tunnel area for sure.. I will try to paint most of it by hand with a chassis sealer of some sort. I am leaning towards Rust bullet, since they have Pint cans for around $12.
The Back does not look bad at all so hope to run the fuel line soon.
I have two cans of
Eastwood Internal Frame Coating Black 14oz Aerosol
I will be using this stuff in the tunnel and heater channels.
I E-mailed Cip1 to see when they were going to get their master cylinder in. Not till June 15th. Who ever is their purchaser should be fired, lol every one if fixing their brakes in the spring for summer. I will prob have to rebuild mine or source one from somewhere else. I have always heard the rebuild kits don't last very long and mine was pretty rusted up.
All for now. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Ok, been playing around with the bead roller and punch press at work in my spare time. Spent most of last week seeing what I could do. Now I don't know if I will end up doing this but I thought I would try and if it does not work out, it goes into the scrap bin.
I sent a couple of hrs looking at all the different brackets and I came up with this. The bottom lip needs to be about another 1/8 longer. I don't know if I can follow the radius and still get the extra lip I need.
The back bracket needs to be thicker gauge material like 12g or 14. Right now I am using 16ga and the bead roller can only handle 16ga and up. I will prob make it shorter and put some trim lock on the bottom. So I don't scratch the paint.
So I got like 43" between the two brackets.
I also have been looking at different designs and don't want to over kill it and look stupid. all for now. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Well got it done. I guess it turned out ok for my first one. There are a few things I am going to change on the next one I am going to make it round in the front.
As far as the sides on this one its too square and needs to be trimmed on the side.
I also think that I don't need to have that bent angle on the next one. Just needs a short angle and have have it bolt up directly to the bracket instead of having it adjustable. I will have to play around with it some more.
Not much else going on right now. Woodburn bug show is in two weeks on June 4th, so that will lots of fun. All for now. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Point taken, this is just a proto so I am rethinking the adjustment set up as its really not necessary. I also see why most drill and bolt through the rain gutter. I am not even sure I like the idea of the shade, but at least I don't have buyers remorse just fabricator remorse. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Ok, wife and kids went on a play date and I had my own play date!
So I have most of the stuff for the fuel line install and I am getting close to running the line. The main problem I was looking at was raising the fuel tank because the tie rod was hitting the bottom. I know I did not have to raise it much and if the front was not tweaked like it is, I prob would have not had to raise it that much anyways. I had some square tube laying around so I used that. I also cut a lip off of one to raise the back of the tank about an inch.
I was also trying to figure out how to clamp the front of the tank and still have it sit tight. So I came up with some loops and weld nuts.
It worked out better than I thought. As a matter of fact I thought it was going to be a botch job.
I also had to make some spacers for the back so I can still use the stock weld nut holes. I will have to get longer 10mm bolts but it will hold the tank really snug just like the stock location did.
I am glad to get this behind me because this one took some thinking to do and some time. I have been thinking about how to do this for weeks. I am just glad it all worked out.
Oh I also had my bug dumped out all the way so I would have the highest point for the tie rod. All for now hope to get the access hole cleaned up and installed next. Don't know when that will be, hopefully in the next week or two. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Picking away one the fuel line install. There is no way I would have gotten it out with out cutting a hole. It does not really matter anyways I can weld it back up.
There is a clamp that is tied to the fuel line behind the ebrake and it was not moving be fore I cut the hole. I should be able to put it right back and give it a good tack clamped up be fore I button it back up. The the fuel line is a bit bigger though.
Thank goodness I can still feed the line through. I was right in the middle of it when I had to leave and it was hanging up on something. I should get it done this next week now that I have two access holes.
I will sure be nice to get a fuel gauge and 10gal tank back. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

So got the fuel line ran and I put on a shut off switch under the tank. I am prob going to be pulling the tank down the road again anyways.
I spent almost an hr trying to clamp the hose into place. I am also going to clean out the tunnel down the road and treat it.
I tacked the clamp in the back and crimped it a little and that fuel line is not moving at all.
I ran the line out the back and made it longer than stock. I also put in new grommets in the front and back. Notice there is one in the back of the firewall where the line goes into the engine bay.
This is the best part, no engine fires if this wants to leak. I will be just a mess on the ground and not a big fireball. If you have not done this and have one in your engine bay take it out and put it under the car away from the exhaust. As I am looking at this I will prob move it more toward the front.
I made my own rubber mount at the fan shroud with a washer and an old grommet that was on the old fuel line. I will prob come up with something a little cleaner when I redo the engine bay this winter.
I think the last fuel line that was in there was not stock and they did a bad job of it. So I had tons of line left I ran a new one to the fuel pump. I think I made it a tad short so might make a newer one.
So after I put all that in took the rear tank off and put 2 1/2 gallons in and along with a new fuel sender. Its not working. I did a little trouble shooting, put a new sender line and still nothing. I did ground out the sender line for a few seconds and the gauge works so has to be the vibrator as I cleaned all the connections and grounds. The other thing is I only have about 2 gallons in it so it might not even be full enough so I will put another 2 gallons and see if that works. All for now. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Ok so I did not feel the big tank was working out too well. It was taking to long to fill up after a dump and raise. Plain and simple the tank was to big. So I have never had bags before and I guess I did not realize that you don't run that much air. At my setting I am going to roll at I am only running 15-20 psi in the rear and 65 in the front. I will prob vary depending on the load but it does not seem to take much. When I raise the front with zero air if I want it to move I need to ramp up to 100psi and drop it back down. I still think the shock angle is the problem but I can deal with it for now. So put the old set up in cleaned up a little. The whole trunk area needs to be redone but I got back to the basics. I have the small tank and it does just fine for what I do. cleaned up the pump wires and cut the hoses way down. Can not seem to get the pics off the camera says they are not there. Maybe post them up if I can get them off.
I gave my 2 yr old a ride in the pile. Wife took a full 7sec of vid.

Yeah took my dad for a ride yesterday, he is 76. I was running it pretty low and the jack mounts where scraping a few times. Needs an aliment really bad and brakes finished. I was running with the e-brake around few blocks. Also had to dump my oil apparently the carb was leaking and I had a lot of gas in my oil. Needless to say I am sure the inside of that motor is clean now. :/ But I did change the oil before the drive. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Not much going on but I got a free tool and it works great for the bug.
Went to the Woodburn bug show and it was great, but really hot. I got the two parts I needed at the time. Fuel guage vibrator and distributor clamp that stripped out. So now I have a distributor that won't move and I can tell how much fuel I have now. I don't think it could get better than that. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

So I love the pile but its going to cause me so much more body work. A family friend had a 68 in his garage that I had my eye on for 18yrs. They are selling there house and I sold my commuter bike, we struck a deal. So All of my stuff is going on to the 68. I will convert it over to IRS down the road and I will have all the parts to do so anyways. I figured I was way ahead interior and body wise. It only has the battery tray that needs to be fixed and a tennis ball size dent in the pass rear fender. I know your thinking all that work down the tubes. I consider it more of a learning process. So the plan is to get it running so I can move it. He left gas in the tank so yeah varnish smell. I also want to clean all of the spot primer off and get it back to the base paint. Prob take a lot of time but hey thats what we do this for. So here are the pics.
under the front hood is super clean
Non molested wires!
Factory tool kit that needs some love.
Drivers side front apron
pass side front apron
Bottom apron
Yeah the interior all there and well its white and tanish brown but that is ok.
The carpet and under the back window are the worst. A drop in the bucket.
The dash is nice and clean.
One small hole in the headliner.
The carpet.. yeah going to rip that out its falling all over the place. Don't mind the pliers for the hood release. will fix that as soon as possible.
That primer spot on the rear fender is the small dent, going to use small dolly to get it out.
I think this motor is little tired and leaky. Will have to see how it runs prob keep it as a spare while I clean the other one up from the pile.
Back apron strait.
Yess! heater channels with no holes! You can see the battery peeking through the rear pan.
Oh yeah there it is.
Drivers side looks good. You can see the shine on the roof, yeah it will buff out with 3 stage Meguiar's wax job after the primer comes off.
Well I guess that is it. I will prob show all the deconstruction. A sad day. Bye Bye pile

It seems like such a waste after all that work, to "deconstruct" your pile. _________________ Good Luck
