Beautiful work! I am tackling the rear end on mine too and I can tell that was many hours just getting it all happy. I appreciate you sharing those detailed pics.
My corners don't even exist below the tail lights so any reference pics are helpful. You did what I plan to do and that's align the bottom of the corner to the pressed line on the apron, seems logical. I have seen a lot of variances of this on the samba but your's seems right to me, considering the body lines. |
I will get another photo of the rear corners. The rear corners do extend slightly lower than the apron, this is correct.
But at the end of the day you are best to align the wheel well arches together in the front to set your height.
Edit, before welding this in I scoured original paint but photos for days making sure since this seems counter intuitive but the corner to apron looks like this from my research.

Thanks for taking the time to post this for me, I somehow never received a notice that you did. The more pictures I look at the more I'd have to agree with you that it does seem to hang past the apron a bit. _________________ Shadetree Westy

I updated the safari thread but this is also for my own thread. These are EIS safaris, I removed the hinges to mount them at a correct height for an early bus.

Football trick to pop the nose out, I braced the kick with a 2x4 panel so it would not bend out. Then a stud puller using a hammer around it and some shrinking. I have a little more work to do and then some spot blasting in the areas I cannot sand to get rid of surface rust.

So fair warning, some wont like this on the Samba. Others will find it interesting.
Having been into buses for a long time I want a 23 again. My bus is currently a 15 (clone) but I am planning to make it a 23 (clone), time and job permitting. I don't feel bad taking a junk yard bus, stripped, frame cut out and making it solid. I have now replaced most of the lower 6 inches.

Since your bus is already a 15 clone, making it a 23 (if that is what you want) would not be a bad decision in my opinion.
Now if the bus was a real 15 window, then I would urge you to re-consider.
Looking foward to seeing the results. _________________ WANTED:

I am not sure that I would convert a real 15 either.
I used EIS outer skins, I did not like the EIS inner skins at all. There was no way you could end up with good body lines around the windows. I used Gerson inner skins. They were hand made and needed some mods, but I am happy because their window pressings match the side window pressings.

So I am gathering parts for the roof conversion, everything is on order. I was really surprised to have these parts show up in 4 days including the weekend from England. I would have bought them from WW but they are out of stock for 2 moths, plus WW wont ship unless they cut the big panel in half. Another major bonus was WW wants $1500 plus tax and shipping while VW Heritage was $1172.59 shipped air freight for the same parts.
I have been researching my options for months, more on that later. May be some time before the conversion, some house work is going on. First things first, primer so they don't rust!

Long time for an update. I have struggled with repo metal fit and I finally found my combo. Autocraft inner skins are not deep enough to be even sort of useable, see this thread.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7982565
But I found a good combo, Autocraft outers, Klassic Fab inners... I added the front pressing which the KF needed to fit, but I am very impressed with the Klassic Fab inner skins. Plus I am moving forward again. Cell phone photos...

Don't know why I expected these to just install themselves... The front skylight windows are deeper in the rear upper corners so I modified the Autocraft. This allows the glass to sit flush to the flange.
I welded the outer skylight metal close at the edge so the welds would be hidden by the inner section. The KF inner section is very nice and aligns very well with the Autocraft.

Thanks WCFVW69. I am continuing to work on the bus. I have a feeling the Autocraft outers used the same die for the left and right window openings and then stamped different flanges. I had to modify the left side much more than the right side. But now the front and rear depth is the same. Much more work than you can see... I had to cut the front and reduce the depth and cut the rear to increase the depth.

So I test fit skylight windows today, they fit, that is a plus. I check that my doors are still a good fit. Really the fun part for me was that one door had some tin canning effect after replacing the lower section. I have been using a shrinking disc but I TIG shrunk one door today. Worked great. Heated and moved around the TIG torch and cooled with water. Worked perfect.

What did you use to add the additional side windows (the 12th and 13th Windows)? |
