I had the 5.5 wheels on the back of mine at one point, but the tires rubbed on the rear quarter panel. Do yours? I thought about rolling the fender, or I could get a different size tire. I Almost thought about getting just a different brand tire. Sometimes a different brand will have a slightly smaller size.

Anyway, do yours rub? If so, what did you do to remedy that?

Bought my sport ghia in 1991 from a priest at the University where I taught.
VIN 1432622540 bought originally in Princeton NJ. Undergoing restoration
and I was researching the stripes when I came upon this thread...MUCH
APPRECIATED information as my car had been repainted and I wasnt sure what would be correct. I have the original window sticker (somewhere!) if anybody is interested.

Hallo fellow sport ghia owner and welcome on thesamba.

Do you have a coupe or convertible?
Also what kind of Information do you have about the original decal sceme from your car. (Maybe you have old pictures of the car or from the window sticker ) We are still not sure if there was a difference between the coupe versus convertible or a difference between early and late.

Regards
Patrick

I would love to see your window sticker. Could you scan it and post it? or take a picture of it?

Thanks

I put 914 5.5 sport Wheel with a ET40 offset not the sportbug Et26 offset Wheel. No rubbing at all with the Porsche Wheel in my case

My car is a coupe and was repainted when I bought it. If the repainter was
true to the original striping, it would be the "thick" version, black rally stripe extended from the bottom chrome strip about halfway to bottom of door, rocker itself yellow. No striping behind the rear wheel. I will make copies of the window sticker and send one to any sport ghia owner.
cheers,
dan

Mine is missing the Original rims.

What is the correct ET value for the 4.5 inch sport rims.
I have found them in ET 34 and ET 41.

And also with raised edges and non raised edges.

What is correct for the sport ghia?

It looks like a second Sport Ghia in the province of Quebec. I was not sure that it was Montréal because of the English publicity in the window of the Library behind the Ghia but after a search on Google I found that Drawn and Quaterly is a canadian comic book Publisher based in Montréal so I learned something today Razz
I will check with some friends that works VWs in Montréal if they know the car

Mine is Vin 14325429xx

Owned it now 16 years. Previous owner painted the rims to match the car and did away with the stripes. Seats and steering wheel are correct.

Cool, another sport ghia.
Do you also have pictures from the previous owner. Off course, we would love to see pictures of the car in the balck stripe.

Your VIN is earlier than the ones we allready had. Did you ever bought the birth certificate for the car?
If not, cal you tell me the number of the build tag that it fitted next to the front bonnet locking mechanism

In the last months I collected proof that the convertible and coupe were build next to each other. I have found a convertible with an early VIN number 14326201xx and a coupe with a late VIN number 14326225xx

That gives the conclusion that the striping for the convertible is different than the striping for the coupe.

One other interesting fact is that the model was named 1471 for the convertible and 1491 for the coupe.

That's interesting information - the Sport Ghia equipment did not come at extra cost!

I wonder if "1471" and "1491" were internal model numbers at Volkswagen of America (since the Sport Ghia was only offered in the USA via Volkswagen of America distributorship, which undoubtedly commissioned this "special edition" in an attempt to stimulate sales against newer, cheaper, sportier models such as the Toyota Celica).

OK I will add mine also, this is a 73 convertible, it has the correct wheels, steering wheel and I can see the remains of the stripes in the door jamb. The VIN is 14326213XX

Hello fellow Karmann Ghia Fetishists,

I've also spotted this one over in the old country in Budapest no less ....
http://www.hasznaltauto.hu/auto/volkswagen/karmann...aj-8541315

My own example is chassis #143 2620***

Sadly I've done nothing to her since shipping her over the pond in the spring of 2014 as my step father also passed away during that time Sad
However her insurance value has certainly made me smile Wink
