Hi,
I just bought this 68 vw westfalia that is a walkthru and only has an original 7000miles on it. It looks like it needs some frame work and the lower 6inches. Do you think i should part it out or restore it as i'm unsure.
I priced out fixing it and it seems like a great idea but then again that is a lot of work. looking for input how rare is this bus? Is there other 68 walkthru westfalia busses out there that are solid and don't need all this work? or even a decent solid body shell to transfer all the hard to find parts too. It is one of the first baywindows the door handles are wrong on it..

i fix alot of clapped out shit, but sorry to say, it's a parts bus. there is no way that bus has 7K on it, more like 807,000
what's the VIN, it's not a 68 model year either.
sorry if it sounds like i have pee'ed in your cheerio's, but i know what it takes to do a bus right, and there are far better starting points _________________

I think the odometer was broken about 250,000 miles ago.
P. T. Barnum is most often associated with the circus sideshow and the display of freaks. While this is true, he is also the founding force behind one of America's most famous circuses: Barnum & Bailey Circus. Barnum is also affiliated with the famous quote "There's a sucker born every minute." History, unfortunately, has misdirected this quotation. Barnum never did say it. Actually, it was said by his competitor.
And documents are never forged, and everyone tells the truth, etc. _________________ 1974 VW Combi 1800 Auto. Weber 32/36

well it is an original ontario canada bus they all end up looking like this if you don't park them inside up here. This is the usual rust up here.. _________________

It looks like a late 69 because it has the round brake res., odometer above center, and maybe the rear view mirror is plastic coated hard to tell. _________________ 1971 Deluxe Sunroof Bay 1905 stroker, dual idf40's, 74mm Scat forged crank, engle 110 cam. As everyone else mentioned, you can find something in muuuuch better shape to start with, but what is "worth fixing" is entirely up to you!

Park a bus or any vehicle outside in eastern Canada and it will hardly rust at all compared to a vehicle in the hot humid SE of the US. Canadian rust comes from salt combined with mileage. I would guess the mileage at 107,000, 207,000 or maybe even 307,000 miles. |

It's a walkthrough because it doesn't have a front bench seat. You can "walkthrough" from the front seat to the back without getting out of the Bus. It's also a bucket of shit. Come on dude look at that thing. 7K miles? You're smarter than that. Not a '68, no way is that mileage accurate and yes it's a parts Bus. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

I hate to be the the guy that says this, but it looks to me by the way the lower side panels are expanded and rotted beyond repair the previous owner followed the kiss of death by following that frickin idiot who posted how to rust proof your bus with foam and tar. Absolutely not. Part it as Skills said earlier. |

That seat, floormat and steering wheel are pretty clean but no way it's 7K OG Mi's, I'll hazard a 107K guess. I've owned things that were stored outdoors in that area so the decay isn't really suprising, it's a combination of summer humidity and acid rain from the industry upwind that causes it and sometimes it's horrific even if it's never been on a salty road (like steel airplane parts for example).
Regardless it's a pretty tough looking bus now so low mileage or not even you won't come out ahead restoring it Erb. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I have two 68 walkthrough (not rare) westys in my yard, both of them in better condition than that rust heap. One I got for free and the other was $400. You have nothing more than a rusty pile of scrap that is not worth $1500 _________________ 1966 Velvet Green Standard |
