Have you been waiting for borninabus to recommend himself? If he doesn't then I'd recommend him. They don't come much better _________________ 71 Superbug

Prepped the van for re-clear coating my bus almost a week ago, but then didn't have agreeable whether until today.
Laid down three coats of clear today using rollers and a brush. Looking nice and shiny, but more importantly, the paint job should be protected from the harsh South American Sun for a while longer.
Also took the opportunity to repaint the metal on my roof rack and re-clear coat the wood slats. Going to let the paint set for 24 hours or so before I put the rack back up. Also going to finally move my solar panel over to the driver side of the rack for easier access to the rack for luggage (doh! didn't think about that when I installed it the first time around and didn't want to go to all the trouble of re-routing the wire and re-ziptieing the thing down.) _________________ 1979 Bay Window 2.0L FI

I spotted this (I believe 78 ) VW bus near where I'm staying in Guayaquil, Ecuador at the moment. No the crater on the side of this bus was not a planned modification for improved aerodynamics; a motorcycle t-boned the bus. The crater looks a lot like the one I left in the van I that t-boned in 2007 on my Kawasaki ZX-6R after he ran a red light. Luckily I escaped with my life. Apparently the motorcyclist that ran into this bus wasn't so lucky (neither was the driver as he only had one way insurance and the motorcyclist that died had no insurance). Can you believe this is still a daily driver at the moment? The bus is up for sale by the way. I think the sliding door might stick a little bit. Needs a "little" work.
You never know what kind of whacky combination you will come across. Take this VW Beetle with a General Lee paint job complete with confederate flag that I spotted in downtown Guayaquil, Ecuador today. Loco!

Haven't checked-in here in a while. For those who have followed along via hippievanman.com or on social media @thehippievanman you will know I made it down to Buenos Aires, Argentina and then shipped my bus up to Veracruz, Mexico in January of this year. In May I drove the bus back up to my home - Toronto, Canada.
Quite the adventure over the past three years to say the least. Rebuilding my motor along side Jim Hayden (Samba member, motor head and kick@$$ guy) at the beginning of the journey in SoCal was one of the best decisions I made. It was smooth sailing (mechanically at least) all the way to Bolivia. Rebuilding with Jim was a huge opportunity to learn more about my first VW and oh did that freshly rebuilt 2.0 preform incredibly, even on multiple climbs over the Andes.
Sadly I had a mishap in Bolivia when I looked to a mechanic for help to diagnose an issue I was having trouble sorting. The mechanic cross threaded my #3 spark plug port in the process which was later repaired with a helicoil when I discovered it. After that error the motor never quite ran the same although it did get me down to Argentina and back to Canada from Mexico.
Last week I felt a major loss in power. After an engine blowby test it was evident that there was a bigger issue (shot seal, rings.. or??).
Now that I'm back in the comfort of my home with access to a good assortment of tools and jacks, I decided to embark on pulling and tearing down the motor and attempting to rebuild/refresh it my self - with the assistance of youtube, my manual, thesamba and friends of course.
So far I have got down to the P&C's and here is how they look.
3 - 4 head absolutely covered in oil and grime.
burnt ring on the #3 cyl.
#3 piston has some serious scoring.
When I pulled off the 1 - 2 valve cover, I discovered the #2 rocker arm adjusting nuts had come off completely and were resting at the mouth of the #1 push rod tube port. Scoring on the #2 valve spring retainers as well as some super minor scoring to the head where I found the nuts below the #1 rocker.
3 - 4 head on the left, 1 - 2 head on the right. 1 -2 looks as clean as the day i picked it up at Brother's in SoCal.
At this point it's looking like at minimum I'll need a new set of P&C's.
One thing I'm wondering is should I open the case to inspect the cam and bearings/make sure everything is good and snug OR will replacing the P&C's, seals and rings + having the 3 - 4 head machined be sufficient? _________________ 1979 Bay Window 2.0L FI

The 1-2 adjuster nuts would account for your pour running.

How many miles on the engine?
If you had good oil pressure, good end play and you have no noticeable shake in the rods after you remove the pistons. I would say no.
I would at least remove and inspect the rod bearings. Reinstall with new nuts.

Keep the P&C's together and take them to a machine shop and have them measured. You may be able to get away with one new P&C and Re-ring the others.
Have both heads machined, you got them off.
Toss the head gaskets and shim the barrels according to ratwell's article.

Most Any machine shop can Mic the P&C's and hone them for new rings.
If they are out of specification. You will need new ones.
The heads I would send off to a specialist. Especially with the stripped spark plug hole. It may need to be welded and re-machined.

Dropped the heads off today for refurb at a machinist who came highly recommended. I took off one of the rods and the bearings look great. the rods have good end play and no noticeable shake so I think we're good there.
Time to order P&C's. Probably going to order a stock 94mm kit from AA however I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the 96mm slip-in big bore kit they offer? Am I looking for trouble/headaches trying to get an extra 100cc or is the $80 not worth it? _________________ 1979 Bay Window 2.0L FI

Generally thin cylinders + heavy bus = warpage and accelerated wear, no problem in a light Porsche or bug conversion but it may be a bigger long term hassle than the slight gain is worth for your application. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
Please don't PM technical questions, ask your problem in public so everyone can play along. If you think it's too stupid post it here
