DAY 14
the video Nate posted pretty much sums it up! the crazy thing is, it was all due to Nate coming up with the idea to rap the two misbehaving fuel injectors against the work bench to free them up! soon as we got them re-installed life was good! one brake bleed later, and down the road she went!
DAY 14 1\2
so i just decided to drop by Nate's shop after i got done with the first day of my new job, to see if there was anything we could do to further the square. after we opened up the flaps, i thought it might be a great idea to put some gas in the ol' gal (we were running on fumes). luck would have it, that Nate was giving me S#!T about how funny it would be if i got pulled over on the way to the gas station. guess what happened.
SO, after explaining to the officer that YES i am aware that the tags haven't been updated since MARCH of 2003, and YES I am aware that I don't have the registration for this car, and YES I don't have insurance, i then told the officer that i am just taking the car up the hill to PROVOLKS. we just needed gas for troubble-shooting purposes SWEAR-TO-GOD MAN!! even THAT was not really convincing him. so i'm starting to sweat a bit when he asks me "hey, don't I know you from somewhere? I asked hime if he ever actually went INSIDE the Casino (the Swinomish Casino in Anacortes WA), and he said "yeah", and that's when he recognized me. "I told him yeah, i used to work there!" We struck up a small conversation, and i was on my way, Ticket-less. What a day! WHEW!!!! _________________ Aircooled VW: more expensive than CRACK!

This would have been a better ending for your story, Dave:

DAY 15:
so the day has come! got it registered, got it insured, got it running! the only issue i've had so far is a fluctuating generator light, and a right rear brake that was adjusted out too far (smokey brakes!), but after adjusting them back in, we were ready to go!!! it's been a real BLAST driving Gertrude, and i have gotten MANY COMPLIMENTS so far! _________________ Aircooled VW: more expensive than CRACK!

That is "working days" as it fits in with Dave's schedule and to a much lesser extent, mine. There were many weeks worth of days with no work at all when Dave was drilling with the Army and on days when he had to take care of family and work obligations. Dave gets the credit for most of the work too. I mostly gave advice and poked fun at him. _________________ Regards,

so i finally got around to cruising around a bit. it would seem to be that my voltage regulator is going out. the "G" idiot light is glaring angrily at me at all but the highest of RPM's, and even then, the generator light sometimes goes out, or will simply dim. either way, 30 bucks later and i'll be good to go! _________________ Aircooled VW: more expensive than CRACK!

well, after a brand new voltage regulator, reading out some wires, and finally reading the Generator out, it would sem that the generator that was all nice and shiney was the one that was total crap. the ancient generator that CAME WITH THE ORIGINAL ENGINE, was the one that came through for me! so after swapping everything out, the "G" light is finally out, and the system is charging at 14 vdc! let the good times roll.... _________________ Aircooled VW: more expensive than CRACK!

Soooo. . . Fast forward 3 years and the Square has performed well for Dave and his boys. He's been driving the sh*t out of it and putting some serious miles on it driving to and from college where he's in the second year of a welding program AND doing to drill weekends with the Army reserve. The mystery motor has performed well, but has had it's issues over the past couple years. It's always had random oil leaks and has had 2 lower studs that have pulled on the 3/4 side. It's tired and on borrowed time. He's been wanting to upgrade but $$$ was just not in the cards for that.
Since I've known Dave, he's been a complete stock-Nazi with his cars. He's ridden in my car countless times and even driven it a couple times and has had a bit of power envy and I've given him appropriate amounts of crap for driving such a slow car. I'm pleased to report that I've officially turned Dave to the dark side!
Last week, I got a hot tip from a client that his son had a motor that would be perfect but we would have to take all the stuff in order to get the motor. Saturday morning, we went to take a look. . . SCORE!!
Dave and I went partners on a motor and all the parts from a '73 Porsche 914 2.0L!! He gets the motor and all the parts needed to get it installed and I get all the 914 stuff he doesn't need. A match made in heaven. With a total outlay of $400, I think we'll be doing quite well.
Over the next couple months we're going to be converting the 2.0L Porsche motor for duty in his Square. When we get it all completed, it'll be a weekend swap-over and he'll be upgraded to a 2.0L Porsche power and we'll also be upgrading the trans to a single side cover IRS trans w/ a 3.88 R&P as well.
Stay tuned for more updates and progress. . . _________________ Regards,

Very cool Nate. I'm sure Dave will like how his car runs after you get done "Darksiding" it. How about taking some pics to show some of the fine craftsmanship so you can convert others who are wanting to do this mod. Please?? _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

We will definitely be documenting the transformation over the next weeks and months. Thankfully 95% will happen before it goes in the car so it should be fairly smooth.
I can't wait to get another video of Dave getting behind this car again with type4 power this time. I think he'll wet himself. _________________ Regards,

Dave stopped by yesterday and we loaded-up his Porsche 914 engine in the back of the fatty so he can clean it up a bit while he waits for funding to come in to make the swap. Eventually, it'll reside about 15" lower than it is now.
Here's a shot of the 3-stud heads that are Porsche specific and boost power by around 15%. With no other changes, he should go from 50hp to 95+hp

Nice. Good to see Dave still using the car as intended. The long block reminds me of my sons engine (still sitting on my Tig table, waiting to go in). The big difference that I see between Dave's longblock and my son Rob's, is the 3 bolt heads (Rob's has 4). Don't know if that'll hurt the "little" 1.7L though. At least Rob's has a GA case, and 90MM dome pistons (I've had the heads off). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

A 1.7L is a GREAT motor especially with the domed Porsche/411/412 pistons. That thing will scream!! Does he have the 1.7L heads for it with the dome recesses in the chambers??
A dome piston'd 1.7L will usually out perform a 1.8L. You can also get 96mm upgrade piston kits that are flat-topped pistons to bump it up to a 1911cc. That'll really wake-up a short stroke motor!! Especially is you put a nice cam in there. _________________ Regards,

As far as I know, the heads are original. I picked up the entire engine from a guy I know. Somewhere along the way, it lost it's FI, and had a progressive Weber kit installed (1st thing to come off). I pulled the heads and cylinders off, as I wanted to inspect for wear (it was an unknown engine afterall), re-rung it and honed the cylinders, and reassembled it. I also left out the head shims per Rays advice for a little bump in compression. It was a supposed 30K mile 914 engine, and the wear looked right (could see the old cross hatching in the cylinders).
He's doing an IRS conversion to the car (body part is almost done, and the rear sub is sitting out in the snow waiting for warmer weather), so next on the list will be to find a 3.88 trans for it. He's already got a good 4.12 trans out of a 71 Square, but we're going to play around with tire sizes to see about helping the gearing a little until we can find a trans. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Progress is being made especially this week. Dave and his girlfriend have cleaned and painted everything. They did a great job. Over this past week we built it up and for test-run purposes, threw on a set of DCNFs on the short T-3 manifolds to test run the motor since it's condition was un-known.
All went well. . . Dave is a wee bit excitable. . .

I bet he's ready to put that baby in, and drive it.
Today we got the 1.7L off the TIG table, and stuffed it in the car so we could work on figuring out what we needed to finish the install. Basically we were just doing a mock up. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
