|
|
Time for another bug build... I sold my static dropped 2" trans raised 61 beetle in january. After a couple of days I really regretted selling the car cause I was kinda bored with it. It was super slammed so it rode pretty hard and I was mostly tired of that after drving it daily for 2 years. Here's a pic of the '61 I sold.
A few days later after some searching I found a 63 that was almost complete but a perfect candidate for what I want to do.
The car has alot of filler on the passenger side and the door has been replaced. It has some pretty bad hidden rust spots but nothing that cant be fixed.
When Im finished with this car I want it to lay on the running boards, why bag a car if it doesnt lay out?
So the plans for the car..
-Rebuild stock 1600 dual port
-3" transaxle raise
-shorten panhead 3/4"
-Air suspension with 5" narrowed beam
-flat pans
-Dove Blue paint job
-powder coat pan
-drop spindles
-hidden stereo
-cosmics
Day I brought it home
and when I finally pulled it in the shop and started tearing it down.
Pan is ready to go get steamed cleaned so I can start the air suspension.
Thats all for now _________________ LCC Automotive |

Glad to see that you're doing another. Your '61 was a lovely car, and your build thread was awesome. I shed a tear when it got hit.
Thanks for sharing. |

Found some time this weekend to work on the bug a little until more parts show up (mainly wheels and tires).
Got the pan back from cleaning to make things easier on me, and the sandblaster.
On my previous bug I didnt like how far forward my wheels were so I took 1" out of the panhead and added a few degrees of caster so I dont need to run shims.
Also since the panhead is shorter I made some room for the newer style dual circuit master cylinder.
Welded the panhead on after getting it square again. Then added a strip over the top for reinforcement.
Also started prepping the rear for the transaxle raise and rear bag brackets
Hopefully in the next few weeks there should be some significant progress made.

how much did you shorten yours? And how much did you pie cut? I did 1 3/8" inch shortened and 3/8" pie cut. Wheel is now center, no headlight bucket woes. wish i did more of a pie cut though, beam adjuster is still kinda low.
Also, what are you doing for the trans raise? I'm assuming from looking at the pics that you're gonna run the mid mount style? Type 2 nose cone to keep shifter location? I've heard that if you use the type 2 nose cone and a standard type 2 front trans mount that it will give the 2" raise??? I used the detroitjohnny kit which I like, but would rather have a front/rear mount set up.
So far so good dude! _________________ Louis DePaolis |

why do you want to go with a 3" trans raise? So you can run the shift rod above the tunnel with the stock bug nosecone?
Any idea how many degrees you tilted the framehead?
just asking since i'm planning a similar bagged and trans raised project for next year. i just need to find the right car for my left-over airride stuff. |

Thanks guys
Hightopbay I only went 1" cause my front suspension will see a range of suspension heights so i dont want rubbing issues or the car to look too od when lifted all the way up. Your car looks cool btw!
kevkev I want to do a 3" raise because Im going to drive the car very low anytime i can. I put 3-4 degrees up front, cause I plan to drive the car at a level stance.
I have a daily driver minitruck thats bagged and bodied and two other minitrucks. I always try to drive as low as possible so its just a habit have so a 3" trans raise would be ideal. Also I changed the plans on my wheel selection to 17" wide five wheels but the choice will be a surprise.
The difference beetween the nosecones is the height of where the shift rod connects. Truly its only about a 1 5/8" difference. So on my last car I had to aim the front down a little more than I liked.
I want to retain the rubber mounts this time, the soild mount was fun but it just was too loud.
Im going to retain the bug nose cone and run the shift rod on top mostly for looks. _________________ LCC Automotive |

Watching this as im thinking about a trans raise. Ideally like to get the wheel pretty close the 0 camber and most 2" have pretty noticeable camber.
Ive already got the front where I want, I cut the frame head by 1.6", no added caster though, just the normal shims. I also had to use UJ's as the searing box and column become too miss-alined. This puts my wheels dead center.
I also made a notch as im using a duel master cylinder, it also means you have room to fit and remove it.
I detailed mine in the thread below, there's also a few other guy there who did it.

Thanks dude, doing it 1" makes sense then. So do you plan on modifying the stock style mount bracket to be 3" taller and then using a stock bug front mount? Any how is the shifter going to be set up? I assume using a rail buggy style shift box set to the proper height? _________________ Louis DePaolis |

Its been awhile since an update but ive been working on it. Just havnt had much time for an update. So far the pan is completed along with the rear suspension. I just need to start on the steering next then I can move onto the body.
Heres what Ive done so far...
Ive seen alot of bagged bugs but mostly on 15" wheels, I want to do something a little out of the norm so I went with some 17" brm's.
Did the 3" trans raise and retained the stock rubber mounts
Started on the front end and made a mess in the process
new air beam from scratch
I do not want to run wheel spacers nor do I want the rear wheels to stick out when layed out. But I ran into a problem that I solved quickly.
I decided to narrow the rear torsion housing 4"
narrowed 2" per side
much better...

started on the brackets and link bars to replace the springplates
full lift
all the way down
start of the bag bar bracket
rear bag brackets in place
and a quick test fit to see how the orange pans fit, and they fit very well I was very pleased with the quality.
thats it for now waiting on some parts to make a custom crossover steering setup next then I can test fit the body. _________________ LCC Automotive |

So you ended up making the swing axle rear a sort of IRS with the new braces to tie it all together? |

There's going to be a lot of cutting, especially in the rear wheel wells lol.
Also just to put it out there for the purists I do have a 100% stock 63 bug in paint right now but I'll post a build thread later. So on that note I appreciate both types of restos when it comes to vws. So I guess I'm a purist that's not afraid to cut a little bit _________________ LCC Automotive |
