I recently purchased a 1981 air cooled Westy and I'm trying to complete the installation of the coolant system. The only thing I really have left to do is hook up the wiring harness (non A/C) which I purchased from the classified section here.
I have ordered the Bently Manual (hasn't arrived yet) but I'm having difficulty with identifying what each wire represents. Unfortunately the harness I purchased did not come with the relay intact so I'm trying to figure that out as well.
I believe the three wires coming from the fan hook up are (1) Heavy (2) Light and (3) Ground - brown?
Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated. At this point I feel like I have scoured the entire internet looking for a solution.

Haha - thanks Dave. Sorry I should have mentioned that I was at least able to figure out the rad temp switch and cooling fan connections. Thankfully I'm not that hopeless!

Negative - once I've finished the coolant system I'm going to convert it to a Subaru 2.5l with either the KEP kit or the kit from Rocky Mountain Westy (somewhat local for me). |

Keep posting on progress as I have an 81 aircooler. I have all the needed cooling components in my garage...just haven't saved up for a motor yet...

The diagram Dave posted should make this clear, but don't forget to fuse this new circuit. Looking at the diagram posted....
I modelled my cooling system after the 1.9 WBX. If you install a "WBX" coolant low warning system would suggest you use the later type module. The early type will flash the red LED and pin the temp needle when coolant is low. The later type only makes the LED flash. That part of the cooling system is easy to overlook and not install but IMO, it's very useful. Also, do yourself a big favour. Do NOT install generic stainless steel hose clamps. Use the better clamps sold by our major vendors. Though these parts are about 7 years old now, on my swap I recently found that a clamp at a rad to long pipe hose had caused the hose to fail underneath the clamp. All hoses and clamps were new at time of swap. Hose itself looks nearly new save for damage by clamp.
