PostPosted: Thu Jan 17, 2013 9:33 am    Post subject: Barndoors, Body Bumper 356's, and 80" Land Rovers... Reply with quote

Although I am not a Barndoor owner... I am a big fan. For some reason I am also a big fan of body bumper pre a 50-52 Porsche 356's, and series one 80" land rovers... and I think many others in the vintage VW world also harbor secret lust for very early land rovers and Body Bumper Porsches.

To the average joe... each of these looks the same as it's later and much more common brothers.... but to the cognoscenti there is a world of difference.

SO... two questions:

1) What other cars might fit on this list:
-Barndoor bus
-body bumper pre A 356
-1949-52 series one 80" land rover
-_______?__________

2) What is the commonality between these and what is it that you feel makes these versions so much more attractive and endearing?

54 Oval
65-67 911/912. (I'd take the 912)
Early 70's Audi 60-100

The models you've chosen are the design in their rawest form, before improvements spoil the initial creation.

Its obviously a split screen thing.

I concur with your sentiments but have driven a 'Landy' and I doubt I would want to live with one.

I'm fortunate enough to own both the other models you mention but would add this to the list.

Saab 92

Based on the the same principle that the first version of any design is as the designer intended. Further developments are usually watering down the original for saftey or cost saving reasons

Great thread!

im really into cars that got the masses moving after the war in the early fifties (splittys, beetles, fiat 600s/500s/2cvs morris minors n minis etc etc) and the early details of these "economic miracle" cars, for me early 2cv's are just awesome,i own an 1988 2cv but its no where near as cool as the early fifties models,i think i'll try pick one up if i ever finish my barndoor

So we have:

-Barndoor bus
-50-52 body bumper 356 pre a Porsche
-80" series one Land Rover
-early Citroen 2cv... this absolutely fits! Corrugated hood only.
-Unimog... yes! early "tractor like" version... like the matchbox toy.
-Beetles... yes... easy add... split and oval only though. & standards fit better.
-early saab... don't really know them.. but they seem to fit the mold

-64-65 911... is a tiny stretch due to motor complexity IMHO but I'll defer to group thoughts! Maybe if it has steel wheels rather than fuchs??? Certainly fits in all other respects...

Simplicity and austerity are key in my mind...along with ease of maintenance... and a clear distinct "style" and "community" and "legend" of its very own that lasted for decades.

Kind of a fun collection of cars actually so far.

how about early Vespa scooters with the light on the fender rather than cowl.

Model A fords probably fit... and early mini's too...

I'm not certain that the early audi was revolutionary or new in the way the other's were... maybe the early rabbit though.... but anything after about 1959 and it's newfangled and modern in my eye... so maybe I should just lay low!

hi LJay! what a coinsidence!! we just PM'ed each other recently about barndoor things, and now I see you own a 2CV ?? so do I Laughing

...in fact, when I read the start of this topic, and the question on which models are loved by these forum-readers... the first thing I tought of was a 2CV too... but then the AZU or AU models, what you call a 2CV Van in the UK Cool

...here's mine, on the LEFT :

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

...notice the LOVELY '59 on the right... mine is a '74, and have a close look LJay, it's a real RHD !!! yes, made in Brussels, for the Belgian Post, but in a RHD version!! They used it only very shortly, then it moved to the UK... now back in Belgium after 32 years in UK...

(ps: the '59 is NOT an AU or AZU but a real AZUL, or AZUL Weekend, made in Belgium only)

Early Morris Minor!
They have the headlights in the grill instead of on the fenders.

Later ones are very cool too but those early models are so much sleeker.

early WWII Jeeps ?
Of course the '59 Mini.
The TR2.
The 39 Triumph Speed twin, girder forks, rigid frame and all.
A DC3 Airplane.
A Lucky Strike box.
A vintage coke bottle.
A wurlitzer juke box.
An elvis' Sun 78.
it's all about the unique , original personality of a design that gets spoiled by later design 'improvements'.
Think a bout tri Chevys. The 55 is an utmost original with its Ferrari like grille and ultrasmooth ( for the time) taillights and fins and Hardtop design roof. The 56 is an ugly rip off and the 57 is only an overdone fading beauty compared to the original 55. and talking about BARNDOORS, and later none-BD, I just hate about everything they added, from the roof vent to the small engine lid, the ugly 2 spoke steering wheel, the fat bumpers, the hudge rear window, the fisheye blinkers, the flat taillights, the inverted air louvers, the 14 inchers, just about everything Laughing Sorry, not trying to hate on the fat bus lovers but it's a NO GO. Very Happy

I think some people are missing the point here. What makes the initial designs mentioned so interesting was an unconventionality. I don't think baby Fiats or Morris Minors were.
I don't think the thread is about design classics, more about the draw of a 'certain design' to like minded individuals.

I like these too.
