Do you think that in the "story" deal, he'll name the names of all who were deviant? There must be a lot of nervous people in the world these days. All this publicity could be making all "user" people nervous, once the dam springs a leak, there'll be a lot of water.

I remember hearing the first accusations of Lance doping coming from the French press years ago. Could be sour grapes after he started winning TDF's or could be they knew something.

The French knew about Lance because they knew EVERY ONE of the top riders was using. They went after Lance because of sour grapes.

It was raised today that the statue of limitations has run out on all the doping allegations except his 2009 comeback run of Tour De France. He wouldn't admit to Oprah doping on any occasion more recent than 2006.

The USA Doping Agency has suggested there is a one in a million chance that he didn't dope in 2009. This means he hasn't really come up honest.

My big question is this: how did Armstrong's bicycling skillz (or lack thereof)
help the USPS's bottom line? (and therefore BWD's retirement fund) Confused

It is difficult to measure the increased business from advertising. USPS only sponsored him for the advertising benifit of him wearing the logo. They didn't have anything to say about what he did or didn't do. No different then NASCAR. Companies pay to put their logo on the side of the race car and have no further imput on what happens.

Since no one outside of the US can use the USPS to mail anything, the only benefit presumably accrues from exposure in the US, assuming we are sitting around trying to decide whether to mail a letter by the US Mail, or send it by United Parcel or FedEx, and further assuming that we would decide to use the USPS if we saw the USPS logo on bike racing coverage.

Sounds like a stretch to me, especially considering how much money the USPS spent on sponsoring the team and how little interest bike racing generates in the US other than when Lance raced. Even the New York Times which I read every day didn't cover any but the two or three biggest bike races, and didn't even post race results for any other races. USPS could have gotten more advertising bang for the buck using blimps.

Reading through the first page of this thread I couldn't help of being reminded of another person looking directly into the camera, shaking his finger and saying "I did not have sex with that woman!"

First off, I'm not fond of cheaters. But shouldn't they have had something in place to discover this years ago? A blood test like the Olympics?

Basically if they can't detect it, then they really can't say its cheating because they have no way of policing it.

Its competition, you get away with what ever you can to win. If he found a way to do it and get away with it, maybe the real blame is on the organizers and their inability to enforce their own rules.

As for him not being a nice guy, well nice guys finish last. In real competition you have to be an SOB to get to the top - just like in business and politics.

But basically when it comes to Lance and most other professional athletes, I just don't give a crap.

You can be an SOB as far as the racing goes, and then be a decent human being off the bike. There are lots of cycling stars like that.

Well, I don't follow auto racing, but Earnhardt's biography entry in Wiki is quite a read.

The first cyclist that came to my mind is Eddy Merckx, but there's many others. Eddy was a remarkably gifted cyclist, the "Cannibal" on the bike but a modest and quiet person always willing to speak to the press off the bike. He has stayed involved in bike racing, is involved in numerous cycling projects, builds his own brand of bikes, and is involved in some charities as well.

There were some doping controversies around him, but that was such a different time and the doping technology was so primitive. Who's to say what a man like Merckx might have done if he was racing today? My point is just that here is a man who is still considered one of the greatest cyclists of all time and who remained a modest and approachable person throughout, unlike the subject of this thread.

His nickname was the "intimidator". He was ruthless on the track.

SuperVert

The USPS doesn't car about weather you choose USPS or UPS or FedEx to deliver only one package. The corperate side is another story. USPS might have made a deal with Nike on co-sponsorship in exchange on Nike shipping 500,000 pairs of shoes through the mail, or mailing 10,000,000 advertisement flyers out to homes across America.

I would suspect that almost any sport is like that. The player may be a nice guy in interviews and on camera but behind closed doors he would cut your balls off in an instant if it meant a better chance at a sponsorship deal.

So basically it comes down to whether you feel better if the guy smiles for the cameras while he screws you then you do if he is nasty when he screws you.

Either way YOU still get screwed!

Professional racing of any kind is not like hobby racing. You can be the good guy in hobby racing because there really isn’t anything at stake. But in the professional arena there is so much more then your talent to perform at the sport that most of them really have to fight hard to be there and to stay there.

In motor sports there are lots of examples of very talented drivers who never get the chance at a big time ride because they just can’t do the PR or perform in front of the cameras. Many of those guys can drive circles around the pros, but they don’t get that seat because the pros know how to screw you out of the spot light.
