DAY 60
Today a year ago I drove it on the road for the first time. |
Two years ago now. So I just had to take it out again.

Positively wonderful--good for you! |
I just rememberd the other day that Nov 5 was the anniversary and with such nice weather lately it would have been ashamed to not take it out. _________________ Project 66 Daily Driver http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538786&highlight=

Man! Crazy to think how far cars can come in such a short time. I've owned my Super for seven years...but I've accomplished far too little with it. I'm glad to see that your car is still going strong. |
thanks for the kind words Beetlebaum!
Well i tried to get a picture of my adventurers with our first day of winter but me recouping from this cold/flu/whatever.... (thanks to working on the truck Saturday during the actual winter weather) I guess I was so contagious that the camera caught the virus and was feeling a little fuzzy.
Now I can say Ive driven it three winters in a row;)

one of the reasons I didn't just stop adding to this thread after driving it as a daily for a year.
last week
Red white and blue. Still haven't noticed any salt on the roads so why not one more drive with it? I may have driving it to work one more time. It was in the 40s when I got there but the way home was in the 20s. I forgot about all the weird noises it makes in the cold weather. The spring plate bushings sound like the running boards are banging off the fenders. I suspect the rubber becomes more like plastic and sticks to the spring plates so it makes kind of a crunchy sound. They are something I'm considering replacing in the summer. from now on I'm only going to have one VW apart at a time. I'm currently doing some work on Herbie's front suspension so until that car is all done this one stays together if possible. See http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=336044&start=80
Some mileage numbers: For 2015 I put on 6841 miles daily driving from January to September then just pleasure driving the rest of the year. _________________ Project 66 Daily Driver http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538786&highlight=

Super-impressive mileage total, Brent, nice job. Yes, plenty of those dreaded "pinstripes" on the highways I noticed as I was driving in to work this morning, so definitely no air-cooled driving while the roads are damp. The 5-day forecast for my town on weather.com shows ~50F highs for Weds and Thurs of this week, along with some rain on Thursday, and then temps into the 50s again early next week, so there is still some hope, IMHO...
EDIT: Whoops, I was looking at "Bran, France," instead of "Branford, CT"! Outlook considerably LESS optimistic now... Sigh... _________________ Stock Steve

Beetlebaum tks for the kind words!
Late entry
Forgot to add this to the thread.
November 22 I had the opportunity to participate in the shooting for an independent film. The movie was to take place in the early 80s and I figured A- Bomb looks like this car might of by then. That is the last time it was on the road. It was in Rockville Ct, only twenty minutes from me. Not a lot of money to do it but I figured it would be fun and they had breakfast and lunch for us. I was kind of hoping it would be kind of like a mini car show and it was. I was also fortunate to be joined by another CVA member. You can see his car in the foreground of one of the pictures. They had us park them for some scenes and also drive by in the background for others. This wasn't a big production so when we were driving in the background they had people to hit the crosswalk buttons to stop traffic a little so only our old cars would show up in the background.
They also had period correct plates!

Guess I'll be taking a break from driving it for a bit. I'm starting to see salt on the roads around here now. It's cool though I have a few small projects to do on the car anyhow. |
Every time I say this we get a break in weather and I'm out with it again. Friday nights rain took care of the salt so I took it out today. I went to a CVA staff meeting at the Southington TA truck stop, about 45 miles south or so. The temps are right about at the limits for the heat to work but I just have to hit 70 ( with the Speed o off 65) and it gets pretty nice. If it was sunny I would have to turn the heat down.
Up coming weather, more winter like but maybe a trip or two. we'll see.... _________________ Project 66 Daily Driver http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538786&highlight=

Taking advantage of some down time due to salt on the roads, I guess it will be off the road for a while this time. I took the driver side door card off to hopefully flatten it out and fix it a little. Also I wanted to get the window regulator to work a little better. When I got the car the widows didn't move. I got them working but the drivers side needed to be lubed better. Now it rolls up and down nicely. Also you can see that my WW vapor barrier worked nice. Its actually the plastic that the chrome for the door window came in.

February 4 and it is the perfect day for some old VW driving.
Still working on the door card but took the car out to see how the new carb idle adjustment screw works. I replaced the plastic one It had with a brass one I got with another carb that I picked up recently. The plastic one would get stuck and started to crack.
I was in the process of finally getting the front marker lights going but hooked up the wire wrong on the drivers side and cooked it. So much for original wiring. Could of been worse I guess as the wire was on fire on the fuel tank like that. I should of added a fuse long ago on them wires just like I did on Herbie. Now instead of an easy fix Ill have to rewire it to make it work again and add that fuse.... _________________ Project 66 Daily Driver http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538786&highlight=
