I pulled the Kombi out of Haines Alaska. The damage is too severe and supplies to limited in Haines to do the work so we are headed to Whitehore in the Yukon to refit the Kombi.
Here are som pictures of the fire damage, it's mostly smoke damage but we've had to throw away half of our stuff as it is unrecoverable:
As you can see it got pretty hot in there.
This is the battery that caused the fire:
So it looks like the new transmission that i have isn't going to fit. The nose cone is different. bummer.
I guess I have 2 options. try to swap the nose cone from the old transmission ( is that even possible?)
or try to build a conversion mount or something. Has anyone got experience of adapting a transmission mount?
(oh and two of the head bolts are pulling from the engine so I have to helicoil 2 more studs on the case, also there is lots of oil coming out of the pully which isn't related to blowby or a blocked breather, so the only other thing I can think is it is excessive end play (which I will have to measure)

Your new tranny has what we in the US know as a split bus nose cone for a full synchro bus tranny. Your old one is what we know as a full synchro type 1 nose cone. I am guessing that your tranny builder didn't realize you had a beetle nose cone in your bus.
The good news is that it should be a direct swap, the bad news is that you may have to swap the nose cone bushing from the new to the old nose cone. Not sure if/how it will fit with unseen differences and wear.
Here is a another photo found here in the gallery showing the beetle/bus nose cone differences.

The powertrain on Things/Buses with reduction gear boxes is approximately three inches higher than those with CV joint drive gear. It looks like your new nosecone is for a vehicle with a powertrain approximately three inches higher. Get my drift?
SHOULD be a nice swap like cdennisg said. Clean clean clean clean is the name of the game though; Rancho's new transaxle builds are tight enough without any grit getting in there. Be meticulous and careful that you do not rip the nosecone gasket upon removal, and reseal with the Permatex specially formulated for gear oils if you want to be 100% in preventing leaks. For added kicks, send the old nosecose to a parts washer as soon as you get it off. Then mock up the assembly, wash it again, paint it with cheap flat black paint that washes off with soap, and get it assembled. Of course, contact Rancho about it to make sure they'll honor the warranty if you modify anything...

Looks like she's holding what used to be a speaker. The battery..... I'll guess multicell lithium ion maybe? Guess we'll find out.... _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

The battery looks to be made of the standard GP NiMh cells, so probably not a Lion issue. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

Yes, my guess was a powered speaker and I Googled "powered speaker Images". but couldn't find anything that looked like it.
I found this googling "lithium ion battery packs".

A description of the battery from https://kombilife.com/kombi-life-sponsors/
"JAG35 not only hooked us up with a bunch of video production kit to make our videos better quality but they also helped us turn the Kombi into a Mobile Editing Studio so that we could produce more videos in more remote locations. We did this by soldering together 150 recycled batteries into one super battery (…the kind that powers VW Buses) and linking up a high Watt solar system to the roof."
Can't help you out with what she (aka Leah!) is holding. |

I swapped our the nose cone from my old one, cleaned it as best I could. there is some play in the hockey stick, but it isn't too bad. I just swapped the whole nose cone unit, so it will leak a little I'm guessing.

Wow good detective skills msnkmobi Leah is holding what used to be our speaker, it wasn't powered, just a standard house hifi speaker that I picked up for $3 in a Chilean flea market before I started the trip. At least I got some good use out of it. The battery was lithium ion made from old laptop batteries. It worked really well until the charge controller failed possibly due to freeze thaw, it's uncertain. I'll be making a video about how I made this battery this summer.
Jehu helped us make this battery, some of you may know Jehu from JAG35, he's the guy who turned his bus electric.

after all the bullshit you've been through, why on earth would you drop the ball on the single nicest component that bus has? I mean, really? so your worn out nose cone will leak, and possibly cause shifting issues. I am beginning to think that you are your own worse enemy on a race straight to the bottom....
but, it's your call. think of all of those that just helped you to fix the trans issue in a proper way. you have just slapped them all in the face by re using that nose cone. if you get it together and there is an issue, I see rancho giving you 2 middle fingers for not doing the repair correctly.
another comment, I hope you aligned all of the shift rails properly too during your swap. _________________
