Thanks! That stupid blue tint stripe is what started this whole mini-project in the first place! I hated it. It looked ridiculous, and at night since it fell in my field of vision it reduced visibility. Good riddance.
anybody wanna buy a slightly used windshield?? _________________ '63 Bus (camper of unknown origin)

If you value your beautiful Sundial Bus, I would relocate that filter to the supply side of fuel system, not the pressure side.

Thanks, but I already relocated the filter out of the engine bay to right after the fuel tank, and I replaced all of the rubber lines.
I also installed a 5 lb. fire extinguisher.

|
|
So I've hated the awful jalousie windows that came in my sundial camper:
I was eyeing up some sliding windows that are "authorized by Vw" whatever that means. They were $300 each so I was hesitant to buy them. Then I found out that a buddy of mine in our local air-cooled Vw club had a pair for sale of original Vw sliding windows for $25 each!!!
So I bought them & ordered seals so I could install them. When I removed all 30 screws per side that were holding in the hideous old windows I discovered that not only did I have 60 holes to weld up, they had cut & hammered over the lips in the upper corners!!!
So I welded up all of the holes, & ground down the welds. Then I carefully returned the lips in the corners to their original & upright position:
Next came some minor amounts of filler & bodywork.
Remember, if you do it right the majority of your filler ends up as dust on the floor.
Next I masked off the bus & shot the primer.
I let the primer dry overnight then scuffed it up & cleaned it to prep it for it's topcoat.
after I removed the masking I was greeted with this:
I let it dry & installed the windows. FINALLY my bus looks like she should!!
I took the kids for a ride & the airflow was amazing!!!
Thanks for checking it out! _________________ '63 Bus (camper of unknown origin)

Warning: purist look away.
I've always loved that wonderful fweem sound that beetles make as they drive by, so when I found a used beetle muffler at a swap meet yesterday for $10 I snatched it up & installed it on my bus. I love the sound!!!
Link
Even better is the fact that the stock muffler actually directs hot exhaust through the crossover that heats the intake. I didn't even know that the cheap, crappy empi "monza style" muffler that was on there only had two openings to the crossover, with nothing to direct the gas from one side to the other, so very little hot gas flows through the crossover. Even more reason to throw it in the scrap pile, I'm not even going to sell it. _________________ '63 Bus (camper of unknown origin)

Good thing you got those windows in there so the kids will have at least a small chance to get some fresh non exhausty air, what are your plans for them when it gets cold out? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

The bus has had this style of muffler since I got it & I've never so much as smelled a hint of exhaust:
And she stays in my garage when it's cold. Maybe that's why I've never smelled any exhaust. _________________ '63 Bus (camper of unknown origin)

That's interesting because the bus originally came from Oregon, but I've owned it since April of 2012.
As far as the engine sounding loud, it absolutely is loud. It's been that way ever since I got it, and I've adjusted the valves with no change. The guy I bought it off of claimed he had the engine built new (it's got a Brazilian case) before he drove it across the states here to PA. The noise hasn't increased at all, and there wasn't anything in the oil when I changed it. It sounds to me like the noisiness is coming from the camshaft. I've done some reading and I believe it could either be loose rivets on the cam gear, or incorrect cam gear size causing the noise. Does anyone out there have any experience with either of these two issues & can tell me if that's what it sounds like? I have another engine I can put in, but I'd rather not tear down this one if there's nothing wrong with it. Thanks! _________________ '63 Bus (camper of unknown origin)

Two months ago I pulled the engine to try and find and fix the source of the engine being so "loud", it always clattered & people asked me all the time if the bus had a diesel in it! Well, this is what I found:
So I replaced the cam & lifters, new double thrust bearing set, and I replaced the poor quality aftermarket crank gear with a good used original Vw one.
I also found that the valve springs were installed upside down oddly enough, so I turned them all around. I installed an actual bus exhaust along with original VW heater boxes that I got.
Now she purrs like a kitten, runs great, and sounds great!!

I completely forgot to post this from the end of the summer last year. I got the idea from a fellow club member here in PA with a '68 Sundial that he completely re-did the interior on. I pretty much copied exactly what he did, I liked it that much. We got a 4X8 sheet of 1/8" thick fiberglass reinforced wall paneling and a jigsaw from harbor freight. I had original fiberboard panels to use as a template luckily.
Next we used heavy duty spray adhesive to attach laminate flooring underlayment to act as slight padding. Next came the burlap material we bought at the fabric store.
This is how the first panel we made turned out:
After making all of the panels I screwed them into place with drill point screws.
I then painstakingly removed and capped each screw with a dark brown cap. Didn't match like I hoped, but I couldn't find light tan caps and it still looks better than bare shiny screws. Seats re-installed and the rear seat laid down to show off my original Z-Products Z-Bed conversion kit (It's a real Z bed )
Somehow I also managed to not take pics of the major project I did before all of this as well. I used "quick roof" adhesive rubber sheeting with aluminum backing as a poor man's sound deadener. This coupled with the new sound absorbing interior panels makes it a whole new, quieter experience. The doors sound amazing when you close them too!! Thanks for looking!!! _________________ '63 Bus (camper of unknown origin)
