I hate to ask because I know I'm going to get heckled about it but here goes.
Ok I'll admit it I've never used a VW engine stand before......So How or in what position do you bolt the normal two arm engine stand to the engine?
PICs please?

Usually you use it on the side that doesn't have the starter on it. That way you can bolt on that starter adapter to run it.. In reality it doesn't much matter. Crank and cam lay in either half. There might be a reason I'm not thinking of.. Like maybe you want the case half with the disty drive to be the one bolted to the stand.

You could always do something crazy and build a 2-head engine stand and have each half on a different head... Crazy, I know.

Ah. I remember. You do want it on the side with the disty because you need to align the drive gear. We always leave an old dizzy clamped in there so the gear doesn't fall out. The idea is to get the notch on the dizzy pointed straight toward the block when #1 is TDC on it's compression stroke. Bonus is that the started adapter will bolt on the other side.

Enjoy.

I am going to look at a harbor freight stand tomorrow for my 36hp

I also need it for my tdi engine, but was hoping the various attachments would work for both, but it looks like this is a pretty special shaped setup.

maybe the curved block will make it difficult?

feed back?

A traditional universal engine stand is not good for a Vw air cooled that is being built or torn down because of the fact the crankcase must be split and eventually held Down by only two bolts. This can be very precarious on a universal stand and potentially damaging to the case unless you find a way to support it or adapt it to the Vw case.

Good news though, the air cooled Vw specific stand or bench mount fixture is available at most Vw shops for very reasonable cost. If you want to buy one online try cip1 or similar websites

the hb stand is fine for a ACVW IF you get the ACVW specific fixture to use with the HB stand. There is a photo of the combo in use somewhere on this site, possibly in the HB thread? AS mentioned the ACVW specific fixture is not expensive.
