Looks like the head gasket blew and let water go into the crank case. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

I was going to scold you for having 'torn" the engine out of your car. You really should be a little more careful than that but looks like the damage was already done.

I tried to be careful, but that didn't work because the spline was rusted into the flywheel. So i had to tear it out...... Usually i'm much more careful tasb.

That is pretty crusty! I didn't mean anything personal- don't think you took it that way too much either. I just get tired of posts stating they ripped tore yanked something apart. We are in so much of a hurry these days...and we're all a bunch of tough guy wienies. When we rip and yank stuff apart what are the chancess of actually getting it back together correctly? Oh wait, nobody does that any mnore _________________ Roads Scholar &

looks familiar, the motor/tranny that was in my 59 panel is like this. Still stuck together and sitting on my garage floor. I've tried to get them apart but have not as of yet, motor is toast like your's, more than likely the trans is also so I havent been to gentle with them, even hooked a jeep up to them to try yanking them apart, didn't budge!
removed both

Sorry guys, not going to bite on the bait today...oh wait I just did.
Saw a VW engine once with the bottom two inches gone. Soil likes magnesium. _________________ Roads Scholar &

Victim of coastal area. Salts are really bad for magnesium. _________________ Currenlty Corralled:

HOLLY <cuss>! I hope that wasn't the original engine? Looks like I'm going to be keeping my oval. I hope mine doesn't look like that when I yank it out. It doesn't turn freely by hand, I haven't tried to force it. _________________ BarryL wrote:

I tried to buy that oval off the mountain about 12 years ago. Seem to recall the price back then would have been more realistic at today's price range, but I didn't have much to spend at the time, regardless.
Glad to see it will finally be put back on the road instead of feeding the worms any more up there on the hill. |

A few of the cars i got from up there were rusted pretty badly. The oval was sunk in the ground for a long time, and i figured the pan was gone. Overall it was much better than i expected..... aside from the engine . i'm sure it was the orig. engine also Steve. |

Yeah, that's actually really surprising, as I expected it to be fairly bad even back when I looked at it. It's too bad that 58 or 59 sitting next to it got hit by a tree limb, or whatever it was that caused the pong in the roof. It was straight when I had last seen it. I've thought about those cars a lot over the years... especially that oval.
You made me curious... I just dug out some photos of that car when I saw it... looks like it was the summer of 2000:

Hey, that's pretty cool. I have some identical pics of them sitting there like that, but just last year. That 58 is a nice car. I got to ride them all 3 down off the hill |
