Anyone ever had trouble finding the key code stamping on BD handles? I looked all over the door handle for the 53 but can't seem to locate it. It's a BD handle with the 29 part# on the back so I'm pretty sure it's original to the truck. Logic says it should be stamped on the rectangular handle base but I don't see it. As for the treasure chest lock all I can see is a WV 345 stamped on the flange between the two mounting bolts. Does this sound correct? Confused

Do you have the BUM handle using the BUM key, I dont think you will find a number on your handle at all. I just talked to Beetlekey in germany and for the BUM key and lock he needed the handle to make a key. "No cutting by number"

Yes it's a BUM handle. I pulled the tumbler on it and there's nothing on it either.

On my 54 truck the only place with a key code was the Treasure Chest door.
My 55 Deluxe only has it on the cargo door mechanism.
I can't recall my 55 Kombi but I probably never checked the codes since I had keys.

I figured this was how Barndoors were but more input welcome.

When you say treasure chest door I assume you mean latch. Where did you find it on there? I had a buddy check his NOS latch (later non BD part) and his code was stamped between the chruch key hole and the latch tongue.

Thanks Everett that's exactly the pic I needed. That's where my WV 345 is stamped. I just need to get a key cut for this old girl now. Very Happy

On my 53 Double Door Panel, I had Gabriel key all my locks the same. He cut the key by the key code stamped on my cargo door mechanism, so my door lock, cargo doors and T' handle are all the same cut. I believe the pins on the actual tumblers had to be set the same as well.

For your SC, your key should be cut to the tresure chest mechanism code. I don't think there is a code on the actual door handle, only a part number.

The lock and BuM key pictured a few posts up is my lock.

I'm pretty sure anyone with a paper clip and a screwdriver could steal one of these old beasts. Laughing

All you need is a 53-style key blank... good luck.

Yes, this is exactly what I used for my '55.

True but only if they are not already set to the right arrangement of key wafers.

4E6 means taylor 62VE or V68K key blank. the wafers in lock should be 45441

Ok, so 50-52 barndoors have this style key:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

53 has a key same as top, and 54-55 the key on the right:

Is that correct?

What lock profiles are each type? Is the 50-52 a Y profile like a beetle handle?

And will the different lock profiles fit any BD cab handle?

I'd like to know what code each type (early & late) of lock for BD cab handles is.

I bought a volcano key for my bus which had the driver's locking handle on it when I bought it, but it didn't fit it.

Like this:

Karl cut me a couple of keys for my lock which look like this (from memory):

I'd like to buy an early lock mechanism to match the volcano key I bought, but have no idea what to buy

My VW key book says:
Code:
Key code     # of interlocks     Date
E,Z,D,V,F           4            1950 - 28.2.54
E,Z,D,V,F           5+1          1.3.54 - 5.8.63

So same code but the earlier ones have less key wafers and the smaller keys.

Split Bugs are key code Y for 46-51, then G for 52-53.
Both of these are also 4 wafers

I also saw this other thread in Split Bug right now too.
It has limited information but does show a Y-code key:

Scotty,
For key codes, refer to Everett's post or Gabe the lock guy would be a great source for this information.

The 29 part number handle posted above is the lock from my March 53 double door panel.

The early buses 50-53 use this smaller Volcano BuM key which also match the engine lid T' handle and the cargo door lock.

The surface of the early lock cylinders do not have an indent like the later 54-55 style and according to Gabe, the early and late lock cylinders are not interchangeable. For example, if you have the early style T' handle 50-53 which uses the Volcano BuM key, you can not install the later style cylinder into it.

I believe the 54-55 use the larger Witte key
