If what you're saying is that it is now legal for French citizens to purchase VW's in Cuba, that's news to me.

Be the first in to scope out the ancient Barndoors!

i'm pretty sure it's still illegal for us citzens to buy and export anything from cuba
unless you bring it into another country first then bring it here
but i still think that is somewhat illegal

I think it will be quite some time before cars are let out of the country freely especially if they are destined to the US. I was just in Cuba this year and I saw very little in the way of early VW's. The earliest one I saw was a 66 Beetle, and very few buses. Not to say they aren't out there but I bet the pickings are slim especially for BD era stuff. Here's a taste of what can be expected there...

I'm sure there are some down there. In the mid 90's my friend owned a VW parts shop in Miami. He had several customer who would buy split, oval and early bus parts to mail back to family in Cuba. Most should be early examples I would think.

I was also living in Pinar del rio in Cuba back in the 90's. Although the romance of finding the pre '59 hidden away like a time capsual in Cuba the reality is different. A car like a VW would be used.

If you want a Lada, there are plenty about. One of the only places (even Russia) that I have ever seen a Lada Limo

The government has loosened regulations allowing Cubans to sell to one another. Before that some Cubans would inherit a broken down vehicle they couldn't afford to fix and couldn't sell. Even with the easing of restrictions, nothing can be exported from the country. Now that there are regular flights to Cuba, some old parts could possibly be sourced, but they'd have to fit in your luggage.

I think after legislating its VW taxi fleet off the road, Mexico City should have shipped them all to Cuba instead of crushing them by the thousands. Those cars would have survived another century.

Yes the embargo set in place a little over 50 years ago in 1962 by President Kennedy would take (excuse the cliche phrase) "An act of congress" for the embargo to be lifted. The new announcement by Obama is the first step into this happening down the road though.

yeah I did a little more research after I posted the question and it seems we're going to have to wait a little while longer before we start thinking about going there to look for old cars

I am so happy about this. Rather than the political dick swinging and sabre rattling doesn't help anyone. A bit of world famous American hospitality would do a world of good.

Who wouldn't want to be the American Ambassador in Havana?

ive read a lot of articles about cars in cuba. most are cobbled together from whatever they can scrounge together and ran for millions of miles. I think it will be exciting from a look what I saw perspective, but I doubt there is much there that will be worth rescuing.
