I pulled all those lines and put in the good German stuff. |
only problem with the "good German" 30R7 hose is that it is NOT rated for todays gas blends that WILL deteriorate german braided hose in 6 months to a year.
Gates barricade is one that is rated properly:
Approved for use with Gasoline, Ethanol/Gasoline blends
(gasohol) such as E10, E15 or E85, Diesel, Biodiesel including
soybean methyl ester (SME), rapeseed methyl ester (RME),
palm methyl ester (PME), Biodiesel/Diesel blends such as
B20, and 100% Methanol

So as an update... The engine on this car started a pretty bad rod knocking sound. It was spewing out a huge cloud of blueish smoke on startup (oil). So to do the car right, I had Brother's Machine Shop build me a brand new 1600cc single port motor, in a new case. I paid a little extra to have it balanced with the new clutch. Half the tin was powdercoated and the other half wasn't so I did a powder coat run to finish off the other half of the tin.
Since I was doing the engine, the tranny had always been kinda bad in the car. It would pop out of first if I accelerated too hard. I had Rancho build me a new one.
And new rear brakes. (not pinwheel, 64+)
Correct Heat Exchangers:
I've managed to collect the correct headlights, side markers and rear flats:

Thanks Soul, it was good to meet you at the Classic! I enjoyed your car a lot! Maybe you can get on Gizmo Bob about the interior for me I'd really like to get the seat covers and door panels for her.
Congrats on your feature in Hot VWs too! _________________ - Chris

Also, I took the exhaust with the correct heater boxes down to the ceramic coater. Tom mentioned a page back that he was going to do that but got impatient. But since I didn't make the classic and I've got the tranny to put back together etc, I decided to have it done.
There has been some controversy over the early heater boxes... Apparently, really early ones had no wraps? I talked to Alex at ISP West and he said they all had wraps, always. I talked to my buddy Joe (M113) and he says the early ones don't have wraps. I started digging and found that mid 63' they started wrapping the heater boxes. But my car is technically mid 63... It's late may of 63. So, now I don't know if this car came with wraps or not. Does anyone know the crossover VIN? Or does anyone have a way to find out? _________________ - Chris

This was at the bottom of a box (sorry for the blur). WTF is it?
So what do I have, and what expensive things are missing? It seems to be mostly there, but what do I know? |
Its the cover that sits on the inner sill near yr lower door hinge, early cars have a mechanism that locks the front seats in place, |

Yeah, we figured that out about 2 years ago. |

Crazy, just barely. This car was built 1 month 3 days later. SO I guess the wraps stay. And it looks like they are asbestos. Someone in some other thread said that they had them tested and they were some kind of fiberglass wrap, not asbestos. These were painted weren't they?
Thanks Everett for the info! I was hoping someone would come along with that. _________________ - Chris

I think that is a bit flexible too if your car is close to that date - my car is before that VIN #, but left the factory after that date. It has the wraps. Original heater boxes.
1 month later though I'm sure would have them. _________________ How to Post Photos

Now the question is, how do I clean them without getting mesothelioma? What kind of paint should I use? Maybe a "high temp" grey? _________________ - Chris

These were full of oil and dirt when I was working on them. I took them apart, soaked then in Castrol Super Clean for a while then scrubbed and rinsed , scrubbed and rinsed until they were cleaned up. Took a little while. I had the exchange boxes blasted and small holes filled in before hitting them with VHT Aluminum
The protective covers got VHT Black as well
After putting them together, some of the bands were replaced with newed ones
Hope this helps _________________ MonT3

Had the fan powder coated.
And I did the heater wraps... man that took a long time. I zip tied them for the moment:
But I bought some steel bands and am going through and putting these on as the originals:

More Awesome... I got the tranny installed today. This was the first time I had every done the axles myself. The first time I did it, I didn't get the axle into the fulcrum plate correctly and it was off... Then the second time I put the tubes on the wrong sides, and the third time I nailed it!
Also got me some new shocks
Finished putting my heater box stainless steel tie bands with the original cotter pin roller clamps back on
I think the engine is looking pretty good
My Garage on the other hand!
