Sorry to hijack Nathan's thread.....
'46 harnesses are PCV covered. I built 4 of them a few years ago, and had the luxury of having most of 2 original '46 harnesses for reference, from the guy I was building 2 of them for). I have been building wiring harnesses for splits for 10 years now, and get my hands on, and buy, any old "reference" harnesses that I can find. There are many year to year, and even within year changes and variances.
To your broader issue/question, there is no one definitive source. As all of us know that you have to tap information (and opinions too, there are many!) from everywhere you can... then make the best informed decision you can. There is a lot of stuff out there, and we here at this forum are ALWAYS willing to tell you what we think... but for many things, you will find opposing views.
There is a great group of people here, many with years of experience, and we are always willing to help... _________________ John Henry

Cheers John Henry, I like your words and I may be calling on your expertise in the future. Perhaps we will talk at HO? _________________ Rod,

Who knows all of this for sure?
Do we know someone who worked at VW in Wolfsburg in the late 1940s with a perfect memory?
Or has someone actually got documentation giving irrefutable proof to confirm these details?
|
No unfortunately there is no propper documentation around and also no old worker with a perfect memory.
There are just people like you, wich care of vintage volkswagens for many years, sometimes decades.
Some do not care much but some collect all the informations they get over these years.
Informations out of observations at real cars (unrestored ones or their state before the restoration), informations from any kind of literature (especially period stuff) and anything that is note worthy while chatting with other enthusiasts about details and changes.
A great source are vintage pics, in the Gute Fahrt magazine for example, but also any private picture and anything else where details are visible and dateable.
It is like academic studies for years and somewhen you reach a point when you can say things where like that or that at a time.
Even if there is not a real bone dry proof for it.
The tessera parts come together and give a picture of the hole thing.
Like John Henry might be able to tell the year and model if you just show him a one foot long part cut out of a early main harness, so there are others around wich can tell details about certain years and models.
There is amazing knowledge around and you can trust lots of them real specialists. They know their stuff.
Some trust blindly to things written in a books about VW.
Most publications do not cover the very complicated details in the developement of the 40s and 50s and I think there is not one around without mistakes.
So best is to study yourself and interchange with other enthusiasts. Collect any kind of information from any source and make yourself a picture by the sum of what you learn. Then you will get close to the truth. _________________ Master of my domain! |

That's why I love the info I read off the samba. It might not always be correct but often some information is backed up by others or with pictures etc. At the end of the day you still have to make your own choice.
Having a car this early here is very hard. I don't get to see cars this early here in Australia. So I can only compare information from off the internet. |

I love these kind of discussions here, it seems there is no end to the opportunities to learn about our beloved cars. OTOH, I also have a British car, a 1970 Triumph TR6. The British never bothered much about documentation and they changed their cars on the fly whenever they came up with a different part or process. The idea of a "correct" Volkswagen is a possible dream but a "correct" Triumph? Hah! Try to learn if your transmission or engine is numbers matching to your car cannot be done. I really like owning a VW and a Triumph because the whole philosophy behind the cars is so opposite. I could own as many VWs as I could find room for, but emotionally, I can only manage one Brit car at a time. Currently I only have 3 '59s and a '58 VW but in my heart I have room for many more.

I own another non VW car too Don, a '69 Mercedes 280SL. Mercedes is the polar opposite of the Triumph you describe, EVERYTHING is documented, numbered tracked, etc. A real fun car. Don't ever complain about the cost of split parts BTW..... _________________ John Henry

Been a while since I've been on here. But just an update with whats been going on. I think I've scored a set of correct exterior door handles from France for my car. So thats great news and they should turn up very soon in the mail.
I ordered some repro interior door handles about 6 months ago and are still waiting for them to arrive.
I had the doors all apart but now looks like i'll have to put them back together with out the interior handles. I'm a bit disappointed in the service from the supplier.
I've been asked to have my car back at the museum again over winter which I'm happy to do as it gives me extra space at home in the shed. |

With winter setting in again I had the chance to have my beetle back in the car museum. Thinking that I won't be driving it that much over the next few months and its somewhere that people can enjoy I thought why not.
So it was up nice and early today.
here we are.
My car was on display with a 53-54 beetle which looked to be a nice car.
Also on the end was a late model beetle. Not a real vert but i'm sure the owner loves it just the same.
Here are a few other snaps , sorry as they are from my phone.
Anyway hope the pictures give you an idea of what the museum is like. The display opens this weekend. I won't be there sadly but it should be a great event. |

I'm curious what arrangement you have with the museum owner in terms of liability in case your car should happen to be damaged in some way while it is stored there on display? |

Its covered by my insurance which I have on the car. They also have insurance for the same sort of cover should something happen. |

Well there is only three weeks left of the current display in the museum and the next display is American cars. So I'm looking forward to having my car back home to work on. I hope to find the problem with why it keeps fouling the same spark plug? I think it will be an engine out job.
Anyway here is a video of cars that where in the display.

Very cool museum collection, I like the "shop" and the gas pumps and bikes. That car at 2:10 in the video is my favorite though.... _________________ John Henry

Hey guys the spring clip in one of my tailights has rusted and will not hold my lense in anymore. It’s driving me nuts and I’m hoping to find information on anyone maybe making this spring steel clip.

Was out enjoying a drive in the hills the other day. Cars running like a steam train👍
Still not had much luck tracking down the metal spring steel clip for my taillight.
