Thought I would post an update on this. I made the trip to Sweden last november, picked up a Bay double cab I dropped at the shippers and met at the other end, then went back for the '51. Ended up doing 4000 miles in 6 days. Dropped it off to the new owner and helped him and a friend brace the bus, tap out the brake drums, then pull the drums so we could get it rolling. Pics below:

Brian,
i was hoping to see some funny responses and suggestions
Anyway, i am all for restoring to original where feasible.
I was, however, considering that the steering wheel is on the "other" side for a UK barndoor, and the cargo doors would be on the "other" side for a LHD barndoor....
At that point it might make sense to "fix" things to the owners liking. I myself am a great fan of double doors, in a very non-barndoor owning kind of way _________________ regards

Hi Claes, how are you? Glad to see the bus is still being used and abused Figured this would be a good opportunity to post up a few resto pictures
So ........................ I was bored at work one morning and flicking through thesamba when I noticed this thread. Within a few minutes I'd tracked down Marks number and gave him a ring. Mark was driving so his wife answered and a deal was done there and then without speaking to poor Mark!! Now the deal was eventually sorted to include delivery of a braced and rolling bus but what turned up was a wobbly mess wrapped in industrial cling film so a quick phone call to MuscleBus and the workshop was mine to use for the day ............... Cheers Chris, you got me out of trouble that day!! Mark was also a proper gent and stayed and assisted whilst we braced the bus up, got it rolling, and pushed it into the back of a unit for a rainy day.
1 mad thing is that the bus in the back of this photo belongs to Musclebus and is only 3 days newer than this one. They actually left Germany together on the train to Sweden and were both painted by the same dealer before being sold. Small world!!
The bus came with a few other beaten up bits of metal and most were saved for the resto. This deck lid was actually straightened and used on the bus

So after residing unloved in the back of the workshop for a while, (and then briefly changing hands to Dai and then back to me in a couple of convoluted trades which I won't try and explain here), the 51 was dragged to BarnWest HQ in Swansea for work to begin. Firstly what was left of the body and beam hanger chassis section was braced up and removed from the rest of the chassis, and then a new centre chassis was fabricated ready to be slipped back in place once the front section had also been repaired.

With the chassis back together I knew that the bottom of the bus was all nice and straight but the top was still a mess. Braced - yes, but no doubt far from correct. The roof was a mess and so a nice 55-63 roof clip was sourced from FBI to add some strength back. I wanted to save the original gutters on the bus as they were in pretty good nick and I was keen to save as much OG metal as possible. To do this the remains of the old roof was unpicked from the gutters and thrown in the scrap bin, and the new roof was then similarly unpicked from its gutters and welded into place. A roof is welded not only to the gutter but also to the strengthener piece that runs inside the gutter so this work took forever to get right, but it has to be done right to be strong.
As luck would have it I had an early '52 rust free front clip in the shed that included the roof peak, screens and top of the front panel so this was then used to replace the front of the later roof, and a lower front clip from a later bus was utilised to finish the job. Starting to look like a bus again by now:

At this stage the thing got measured and corrected so many times it was unreal. Measure, cut bracing, correct and re-measure, spot weld on bracing, remeasure, unpick, weld, repeat 100 times, drink tea, start over
oh, and we fixed that rear window as it was annoying the crap out of me

Once I was happy with where everything sat it was time to finish the chassis and start filling the gaps so that everything was properly attached in place.
The front section was a pain and had to be removed several times before it sat correctly. Straps had to be used to pull everything into place giving nice gaps around the doors before final welding was carried out.
