To me it appears to be an indicator light. That, along with the black knob protruding under the dash to the far left of the steering column makes me think there's an auxiliary heater installed... likely one of the variants that go above the transaxle under the rear luggage shelf since I don't see any outlet vents up front like you'd expect with any of the trunk-mounted types.
Just a guess. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Great to see a set of what we call in Australia 50/50 tail lights. They were only on 1961 VWs in Australia.I wonder how long they were used in Italy, the only other country to use them. |

That light above the speedo is a standard equipment for the Italian beetles, it lights up only with the position lights turned on, then it goes off with the high beam
The 50/50 lights in Italy were used from MY 60 to MY62 ( MY60 for Italian market without semaphores as standard ) _________________ Italian 1964 "ruby red cocaine bug"

Hello,
Just want to ask you if a 1960 beetle split case trans should be painted in black
or left on bare metal. I have just cleaned mine and cant say if it was painted in black from the factory. I only found small traces of black paint.

What's the difference between 57 to 59 and 60 to 61 heater channels?
Cheers |

Does anyone have some really good detailed pictures of an original mohair headliner in their '61? Mainly the B pillar area, under the quarter window, and the back window area. I searched the gallery and didn't really come up with much. |

Hello,
1960 boxes are painted black originally. But the paint peels off pretty easy. So there is often not much left of it. _________________ ________________________

I just picked up a oct 60 '61 model' that Pastel blue L391. Is that a hard color to find? I haven't seen another like it. _________________ Save a tree eat a beaver |

I think they only used that color for a very short time. |

It looks lighter than gulf blue. The lighting isn't that good

It's hard to say, you don't see very many examples to go off of and without having the paint code sticker in the trunk, or the birth certificate, it's hard to say. |

Unfortunately it's missing the sticker. I can't seem to find a pic of pastel blue to compare it too _________________ Save a tree eat a beaver |
