This is my 64 Convertible that I've owned for over 25 years, the past 15 it's spent covered in the back half of my garage. With the Bentley Manuel and the search function on TheSamba.com, I got it driving again this summer.

Hi Volkswagennut
I did try fitting the window rubber with the chrome strip but the windshield glass the bug came with isn't genuine vw so when I fitted the correct rubber seal it was to lose top to bottom and would have leaked, the seal that's in now is a thicker one so seals better plus over here in the cold rainy uk genuine windshields are very thin on the ground
I don't suppose any one has one they could check the dimensions for me ? top to bottom
I would much prefer to have the correct size window and chrome trim fitted one day if I could find one or have one cut to size

Just was curious.. .. and that explains the reason..

A good glass shop can cut that glass the proper size based off a template of the opening.. plus adding the required glass overlap.. .. Its simple flat laminated glass...
I've had many windshields cut just like that.
Its actually.. a perfect fit too.

You got a beauty.. love the white/red interior combo.. assume black top?

Hi volkswagenut
Yes thanks I think thats the way to go next time, I have two glass screens but neither of them are genuine and the other one is even narrower top to bottom not by much but it make me think either all the genuine ones varied or the non genuine glass cutters were not accurate as well, I don't know as I haven't a genuine one if any one can give me an accurate measurement top to bottom down the centre of the screen It would be most welcome
at the moment im trying to restore my rear view mirror, my up and down mechanism is broken although the chrome is ok, so ive bought a rusty one off here with a good working mechanism to make one good one out of the two
Do you know if it is possible to remove the chrome mirror arm from the cast alloy mounting bracket without wrecking the new working mechanism in the new rusty one ?
Any advise would be great
And yes I almost forgot its a black top
Cheers phil

Finding an original nice clean windshield ... for a convertible.. would be hard to find.. Id settle on a nice kustom cut and fitted one myself..
Glass size.. yes they can vary slightly so I've found.

As for the rear view.. do the best you can with what you have is all I can suggest.

Seems taking them apart may destroy them.. ??

Koch ( I think) can recondition yours..

Or there are reproductions available.

With the cost of convertible parts being what they are, I doubt if this will be sensible to restore, even with the shell costing only $100. I seriously hate thinking about cutting up old VWs, but this is a borderline case. It would definately make more money sold for parts, than restore and sell.

I used to own a nice Karmann Kab, and I got comfortably numb paying through the nose for all vert specific parts. And I only needed a top, rubbers and the right outside mirror, which cost me $150 almost 20 years ago. To think about getting all those pieces from scratch puts a chill down my spine.

I so totally agree that resell price should not be the deciding factor when considering restore or not, but this case could be a moneypit the size of a black hole.

Totally agreed, I am only shivering at the thought of the cost of all loose bits needed to make a car from a shell.

I just bought this from my Stepfather, he restored about 16 years ago. Not super correct, but nice all the same. Looks like it was built in Oct. 63.

Wondering if the deck lid (wide licence plate light housing) and front signals are correct? 58497xx
