Thanks for the verification, I was sure my '61 was cloth. The color chart indicates to me a mid grey.

Now I'm looking for a photo and maybe a call to Chucks.
thanks

So the '61 gas tank was one year only, and thanks to a Samba advertiser I now have one for my resto.

Couple of questions,

1. The tank I bought has a mysterious hole in the filler neck opposite the vent connection. I'm puzzled can anyone shed some light on it? its is a 1/4" dia hole.

If some PO just drilled it I'll weld it up. Just curious.

2. Tank color, the tank is OG gray and I'm looking for a close color match, can anyone help me?

Thanks

accessory sending unit location.

As for the gray, how is the condition of the seam where it sat on the body. If good color take tank to have it color matched.

So it was for an aftermarket gas gauge? Of course the '61 tank never had a gas gauge. I just never saw one - anyone got info?

I figure on welding it shut anyway.

Color, there are plenty of places for me to color match it - I was looking for a VW code/color.

I got this one out of a Bahama blue 61, the tank and sender were already gone.

Interesting stuff.

Does anyone have a photo or info on the installation at the tank end?

Strange set-up in my car, '61 Canadian model Vert. If I'm correct it should not have had a gas gauge and have the '61 only tank (sender depression but no hole).

Surprisingly the dash metal (but not the grille) has a cut out for a gas gauge. the PO has installed a later tank and gauge and I'd re-installing the reserve lever arrangement.

Id weld up the hole and embrace the uniqueness of your 61... Laughing

The hole is usually for an accessory VDO sending unit. It was very similar to the ones used for the 53-60 hump tanks.

It was installed into the neck and secured with a special bolt to allow the circuit pass through the center.

the dash from 58 up had the cut out behind the right dash grille for a gas gauge but factory didn't install one until 62

You can drill it out, I know because I've done it. Be very carefull when you center punch the pivot, as it will determine how well the hole is maintained, when you drill. Step drilling would be the ticket.
I've searched and called the convertible vendors, but they only sell the pivots to customers that are having their top frame rebuilt by them. So screw that, I bought some round stock and went to an old machine shop i used to work at and turned my own. I looked and looked in the classifieds and have only seen 2 new old stock pivots for sale. Needless to say I bought them. There are at least 3 different lengths of pivots on my 1960 frame.

Hello, MY car for your consideration is a 1962 Convertible. Serial # 4545555. Engine# 6554041. It is a one owner, original rust bucket. It has the original motor.

I got a call in 1981 from my wife's friend. She said she was moving to Avery Island, La. She had her bone stock Bug Convertible stored in a friends shed in New Orleans; where we lived at the time. The shed's roof was shot, so the Bug had been in it for about 3 years. She gave it to me for free. She had been driving it when the battery fell thru the floor pan and broke on the street. The Bug was towed to a Bug shop where storage fees occurred. They paid the fees and towed it to the shed where I picked it up. It sat in the shed with an English Rover. My buddy and I spent about 2 hours sawing the rotten door frame off the shed; that had collapsed and blocked the two cars.

I looked at the car and decided to take it home and maybe make a Baja out of it. After giving it a good washing, I couldn't cut it up.

1st thing I did was put a set of fiberglass floor pans in it, I think I got them from "Johnny's Speed and Chrome".

I accessed the missing pieces. The 2 big ones were: it was missing the small glass window and the rear view mirror. I spent the next 3 years looking locally for the pieces. I was working on my buddy's bus; when, he told me he saw a Bug like mine in a junk yard in rural Mississippi. I told him to buy them next time he was there. He came back the next weekend with a rear window and rear view mirror for $50. I gave him $25 extra for his trouble.

Now I had all the pieces I needed except for the top. I ordered a complete top kit from "Chucks", including the Wood.

We moved from New Orleans to Western Pa. in 1995. I drug my Bug, sans top and my 63 Double cab with us. It has set in my shed since then.
Hopefully, in a couple of months when the snow breaks; I will pull it out side and begin the process of getting it running. Will take pics of it as is if anyone is interested. Cool Smile

PostPosted: Sun Feb 09, 2014 9:06 pm    Post subject: 61 Vert, Canadian delivery Reply with quote

Birth certificate in hand I find that my Vert was Canadian delivered.

Birth certificate shows delivery to Canada in April '61 and the following:

M 158 With outside mirror
M 356 Equipment for Canada
(cannot be identified)
M 556 Upholstery leatherette Silver Beige
M 572 Top cover Grey

Missing from this is (Equipment for USA - of course) and now I'm puzzling if my bug should have US spec bumpers or blade style?

Any Canadian bug experts out there? My fenders don't have over rider holes, but after 50 years they could have been changed.

How original is the car? What was the original paint code?

I think M356 consisted of gas heater, bigger battery and a few other things. Im trying to figure out if the painted transmission was a "cold climate" option as some living in Canada said all the transmissions they have seen were painted. A block heater might also be part of the 356 code as well.

There is another canadian delivered vert in the thread

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=444733

Not sure if its the same for late cars but you can tell if the car originally came with "ram protection" type bumpers by looking at the lower spare tire tray. If it had the "plate" then it had towel bars
