Someone is selling a modded 78 for 6300 right by my work. 1600cc, added propane cabinet...shag carpet... not worth 63, eh? If it really does run and drive like he says it does I may consider this one. I'm at least going to go kick the tires and crawl up under this weekend Twisted Evil

I think it's the shag carpet and matching 70's CB radio that put's the real value in that bad boy..

I think it's certainly worth checking out!

LOL hell yeah! He's not sure if it has the OG transmission in it or not. I think I'm educated enough now to know what deteriorates the value. Got my little flashlight, my refrigerator Papa John's magnet, and thesamba archived my braaaaaain. It looks closer to 3k to me, not 6.3k.

It looks pretty good actually. The nose looks straight. I don't see any obvious rust issues. It's pretty complete too except the type 1 engine. I'm not sure why he'd put an oil cooler inside the engine compartment?

When I bought my bus, I spent a lot of time going over it at the owners driveway. He had over priced it big time. When I started "gently" pointing out all it's issues and all the worn and missing parts, I think he realized that. I ended up talking him down $4k from his asking price. He still did well on it but it was just another illustration that most people price up their cars several thousand dollars to have room to come down and make the buyer feel better.

I did the same on my bus and bug, it's the name of the game. There is always mark up and room for negotiation. If not, the individual doesn't really want to sell.

Exactly! People love to haggle.. It's part of the game. A lot of folks are timid and feel haggling is confrontational and don't like to do it. This is why car salesmen take advantage of them. When I looked at my bus and after I had inspected it, I had a number in my head that I wasn't going to go past. I already screwed up once when I purchased my 69 vert for WAY too much money for the condition it was in. It was an emotional impulse buy that cost me plenty.

It does look pretty good, I agree. But if the motor and transmission don't match, isn't the big transmission going to burn up a lil ol' 1600? How can I spot the difference quickly between a 1600 single and a dual port? Also, he says it runs and drives great in the ad, but in the photo I see flat tires. I don't know, that's a lot of cash for a car that doesn't look like it can be just driven away.

Depending on how much it was actually driven this way, the engine compartment nightmare may cost you. I see no air sealing tin between the type 1 tin and the type 4 compartment. Not good. The wiring is ugly, too.

Not that it's a type 4 engine compartment. It's a LATE BAY engine compartment. All late bays in the US came in with type 4's. Most of the Rest of the World (ROW), they had type 1 1600's, a few in Italy and other places even had 44hp DIN motors that I think were dual port 1300's.
Dual port or single does not really make much difference. A single port 1600 might actually be better in a bus.
There are some REAL reasons to do a type 1 engined late bay, but not financial. The main reason is if you wanted to drive it worldwide. Type 1 engine parts are everywhere. Type 4 only US, Germany, Britain, and Aus.
A type 1 engine can be put into this correctly with the proper tin, wires and air cleaner and preheat hoses. Can't remember about the final drive or 4th gear.

This is a pile of junk tho. Nobody would ever run a full centrifugal dizzy in a late bus. Ray Charles could see it doesn't work.

There I go assuming that a bus in the US would have a type 4 engine compartment. Silly me.

made the purchase on this 72 hightop today. It's a pretty cool bus, I can't wait to start cleaning her up. It was built August of '71 and was repainted from the beltline down over the Niagra blue. She is almost completely engulfed in the bushes, and the owner said he drove it up on the hill & parked it there 8 years ago. He said it ran & drove great, but the clutch release bearing was bad.

Decklid is there. Believe it or not, the battery trays are solid. Doglegs have rust. Underneath from what I could tell looked solid, same for wheel wells. Bus came out of Minnesota. Pop Top looks solid, all the camping gear is intact. Front seats are gone, replaced with shotty mid 70’s seats. Has two original keys. Firewall is removed laying on rear cushion, gas tank is there. Again, no motor or tranny.

The images of the 1975 Pastel Westfalia:
Chassis # 2352022492
Production Date: 11 September 1974
Engine Type 4 (ED) FI
Color- L90D Pastel White
Dest. USA, East Reserve

Deckled is laying on rear cushion. Underneath looked decent from what I could tell, all camping items are in place. Dash cluster is there but removed. Interior material/seats are surprising very nice. Body and nose are straight and solid. Rear corners have some bottom rust and main battery tray is rusted through. Top looked solid, no water damaged visible inside. Front floor is nice.

Oh cmon! Someone has to have an opinion of Consvws' Hightop find, and my lost and forgotten duos in the Arkansan woods.

Consvws, that is considered a Adventurewagen, right?

That Hightop looks like it was just waiting for you to pull it out. The flowers all around etc. Thanks for the pics. Great find. I want to see the inside and what it looks like washed up.

OOOwww. a PORSHE engine. or 411/412.
(I know how to spell the man's name!)
why would there be corrosion on the case? They are aluminum. Not so great in sea water, tbut his is not sea water. I think the engine is not on the ground, but rather some critter has built a nest in the engine compartment.
