My buggy has a transaxle from rancho performance. They apparently deleted the reverse light switch as all there is where I"m used to seeing it is a bolt head. Where can I find a replacement switch? I'm apparently not using the right nomenclature as I'm not finding anything.

If someone id not mess up the threads in the transmission, you can use the OEM switch. Most VW store have them.

Another question about the backup switch. Like I said before, there's currently a plug of some kind in the hole where the switch should be. Can I unscrew that plug and screw in the switch without yanking the tranny? Should I expect fluid to flow out if I do?

No fluid should leak out, I believe you can get switch in without pulling tranny... You just have to have nimble fingers...

And there is a gasket for the switch. There may be one on the plug that you can use.

I'd call rancho before I did anything and make sure a backup switch will work on their transaxels.

It will work.... Both do on my Rancho boxes...

The only problem in that area I ever had is somebody put the wrong plug in on transaxle I once had and it kept box from going into reverse!!!! Changed plug and went from previous owners blown transaxle to a good one....

Resurrecting a very old thread I know, but I have a sneaky feeling that's very similar to the problem I have at the moment with my new box !!

IF some one used a oil gallery pressure or relief plug from ENGINE in transaxle, YEP that is your problem... Engine plug is a tiny bit longer than transaxle plug and blocks reverse slider...
