Hey Guys,
I'd like to start a thread where when can discuss the early big window convertibles built from 1958-1960. These cars are unique in that they were freshly updated in minor ways, but continued on many characteristics of the oval era. It would be cool to have a point of reference for all production changes, correct era parts, accessories and mods. I'd love to see your current and past 58- 60 convertibles, Post up your pics!

Ill be starting a registry here where you can post up your car. send me your cars pic with Vin, body #, engine # and pic of a birth certificate if you have one. The registry will be set up with the cars listed in order of Production. I'd also like to set up a color reference of every paint color for these years as well.

Lets talk about your project, your concerns and stuggles and questions about your cars!!

One thing I'd like to start the thread off with is that I just finished going thru a eberspacher B2 gas heater to put in my 58 convertible. However the outlet of the heater sits right where the convertible trunk locking pull and dome light switch are. I noticed in progressive refinements these controls moved over towards the steering column in september 59 (60 model) (maybe for this exact reason of the heater outlet?) Im thinking i will have to move my controls over. anyone have an eberspacher in a 58 or 59 convertible?

VIN is 2016390, original color Atlas Blue. Original engine long gone, but I do have the pre-"we don't tell you the engine number anymore" birth certificate somewhere in my archives. I'll look it up. I have the body # floating around the garage somewhere, too (see the pic of the front end).

On the pans, I have new ones to weld in. I know I need to cut iff the jack point, but what about the metal piece under the pan that the jack point is partially connected to.

Also, I am doing the reinforcement rails next. How do you guys remove the old ones and are the new ones welded in on both sides of the heater channel?

Hey Dan, that extra support panel can stay if you want as long as it doesnt stick out past the edge of the pan, but it should be removed to be correct. you may have to trim the edge of the pans with shears or a grinder to avoid scraping the inside of the support rails while dropping the body on the pan.

as for the rails, the spot welds can be drilled or simply cut off the whole support rail with a cut off wheel. is the heater channel toast too?

I have a great book from House of Haselock in the UK which has a great step-by-step covering vert sill replacement. its best to do it with either the doors on to check for the body clamshelling, or make some braces from the door hinge plates to the door lock striker plate mounts. I would complete one side at a time and make sure the door is acceptably aligned after tacking, before your final welding. the door can be adjusted later at the rear shock mount with rubber shims if necessary. let me know if you want to borrow the book, or I can copy some pages for you!

No engine number.... Sad Fjord Blue--it'd been a while since I'd seen the BC.

Fjord blue appears to be a '59 color... Weird. It's a late '58 model, but surely still a '58...

Yeah that is weird. i think they screwed up your birth certificate. Fjord blue started way past your chassis # and is a 59 only color for sedans. Thats scary if the musuem screws up a birth certificate, i now think they shouldnt be taken for granted and trusted. I can tell by your pics in your gallery that your car is atlas blue metallic. if your OG paint is metallic it is atlas blue, if its not it could be capri blue, but thats a 58 sedan color, but could be special ordered that color. Hmmm. Take a pic of say your cowl panel or somewhere the paints exposed in good light and post it up here. Your car left the factory on august 18- my birthday! Too cool.

Yeah, Brett, I could use that book. I've never done rails before. The heater channels are solid (luckily). So, I will have to trim off the flange that goes around the outer edge of the pans to fit the rails? Are you going to the Jamboree tomorrow? If so maybe I could get the book from you then?

hey Dan,
I wont be at the Jamboree, prior activities planned , but i can pop by your place and let you borrow it when I get back. I still need to measure your vert seats upholstery, maybe I can do it then? havent you got the rails for your vert yet? which ones did you you get? Ive heard theres even ones just a hair oversized, just big enough to slip over your originals so you can just weld them on and have more sthrength than replacing them.

Worst thing ive ever heard. Want to replace your rails in 2 years time thats the way to go, leaving all that rot in there to eat the new metal. YUK.
Cut them off replace and have a long time before you need to look at it again, unless your flipping the car then buyer beware. Yes Im biased as i produce copies of NOS early rails but there are a lot of decent ones out there.

heres a picture of my verts trunk in atlas blue metallic. does it look the same as your car? Im under the impression this is a rare color for 58 verts as its 58 only vert only and your car may be the first besides mine ive seen in OG paint. Only seen 1 59 vert repainted this color.

Ill take a few more pics of this color in other spots of the car too.

I cut up a '59 fjord blau car for parts, and I held up part from the trunk to the blue on the convertible. Definitely different colors. The '59 is much more grey.

No, I've not bought the rails yet. Who makes oversized ones? Would look kind of odd wouldn't it with larger than normal rails? Who do people suggest as the best source for rails?
