got one door together. whew what a chore. hopefully the other one will go in better. Still need to pickup a new windshield and some window rubber. I was thinking about waiting to install the windows until my cage is permanent mounted in the car. which means still sandblasting it and getting it to powder coat.

Did the other door last night. Having issues with the window scrapers sticking to the glass when trying to roll the window up or down. I'm stumped. I'm going to try to clean the rubber with soap n water. Hopefully it fixes it.

Welcome to the wonderful world of crappy parts!

The only solution I have found is to search swap meets for good original scrapers.

I used a little liquid dish soap rubbed on the edge of the rubber and vthat woked till the rubber was worn into the windo motion. No problems since and the soap just washes away.

I got German parts just to avoid the issues. I'll try the dish soap trick. Thanks.

HOLY SMOKES!! Been awhile for this guy...
Updates, i got my doors all done. Had to take some door handles down and get keys made, but now i can lock and unlock both sides Very Happy .
I'm almost done with my home made shock towers. I think they will hold up just fine. I've always been one to overdo things rather than go on the lighter side. I was able incorperate the stock vw bump stop into them, so hopefully all works good. I will snap some pics later and post. (at work now). Hopeing to finish shock towers, fix bent frame horns, and get my rear brushguard done this weekend. Then i need to sandblast my wheels and get everything powdercoated.
meanwhile i need to work on the headliner/padding, and finish bolting down my body before i forget!! That could make for a shitty maden voyage. haha

well here we go Cool It has been a very long time so I might end up repeating some things I've mentioned before so bare with me.
As you know(or I think you know) I pretty much had to rethink the stock shock towers. with the addition of IRS gussets on a stock swing axle torsion housing and shock towers, the trailing arms would hit the swing axle shock towers, so I ended up having to make my own. here are some pics.

as you can see here I pretty much had to cut off most of the stock shock tower
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I had to cut off at an angle other wise the trailing arm would crush the brake line against the shock tower and the bolts that hold the spring plate to the trailing arm would also hit.

I used a square washer and bolted it to the shock tower body mount, then welded it also. then welded my tube to the square washer and welded a plate where I had to cut it at an angle. I think the stock shock towers are cast iron. Hope it all holds Pray

I also used the bump stops and put those in.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So I also welded the tubes to a 1-1/2" X 3" rectangular tube across the bottom of the luggage compartment and tied into the frame horns. I also tied in the rear roll cage to the 1-1/2 X 3 piece of tubing and sandwiched the luggage tray in between. Hoping all this makes it stronger.

I raised up the shock mounts so they are just below the luggage compartment and raised the bottom shock mounts up about an inch. I got longer shocks and with my body lift I got more wheel travel.
At full compression I have about an inch or so of clearance between my tire and the fender/fenderwell. I'm thinking I have about 8-9" of travel.

for the rear bumper I welded the two bottom mounts to the solid tranny mount and the two tops are sleeved inside of the shock tower tubing.

Well that's it for now. in the process of pulling the roll cage back out. I need to finish up some welds and round the corners on the two back pieces.
then i'm going to sandblast the whole thing, my front and rear bumpers, and my wheels and get them powder coated.

I'm sure some of you probably frown on some of the ways I installed some things like a bolt in cage instead of weld in, ect... this is just a mild occasional weekend Baja. My next one will be more "race" type hopefully 3x3's, coilovers, bumper to bumper fully welded cage, ect, ect, ect...

After the powder coating is done, just got to put that back in the car, throw in the seats and shifter. I'm going to try to get the headliner, carpet, door panels, and whatever else done while its all out for powder coat. I plan on putting my windows in after the cage is back in the car also.

well that's all for now. see ya later

PS, Windows 8 is a bitch without a touch screen. I need to get a mouse!!

It's cast steel. Shouldn't be a problem. I have a bar from where you have it on the shock/body mount - vertical to my shock mounts. It's been fine and took quite a beating until I reinforced the cage.

Glad to see you might get to drive it someday. Wink

Well. Been a while. Long story short. Trying to get her driving by the forth. I got the headliner/interior done minus door panels. Finished my cage and brush guards, put windows, put in custom LED Ribbon lights for my dome lights, found a set of 13.0 paddles on Douglas rims:), threw together an engine. Got it running and oil started running also right out of the #1&2 cylinders at the case:(. So I need to tear into it and see what is going on. I had to replace my clutch and pressure plate the last two days on my 1990 F350 diesle. All by myself with two floor jacks. That was interesting. So that hindered my time for baja. Plan on hitting it hard this weekend. Hopefully a round the block road trip is on the near future. I will have pics and more updates soon.

Well, I DROVE MY CAR Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
It has issues, but that was expected. The steering box needs rebuilt along with the king/link pins. My engine i threw together was hurting. My carbs weren't working right and i was leaking a crap load of oil. But i did get it out on the sand a couple times. My rear suspension was AWESOME. it seemed to really cushion on the whoops. Front not so much. So I still got a lot to do on the car, but it's rolling under it's own power. Here are some long overdue pics.

Good looking bug! I like your roof rack, similar to what I want. Is that the clamp on type or is it welded? Where did you get it? Or was it custom?

Hows the dunes in Oregon? Worth a trip from Los Angeles?

thanks, I built the roof rack myself with a 3/4" EMT hand bender. was a bit tricky, but worked out. I made the clamps also. I ended up having to drive screws through the clamps to keep them from popping off. If I were to build another rack I would make the clamps attach more at an angle parallel to the roof then I don't think they would want to come off. Or just weld some tabs on the gutter and use turnbuckle style clamps.

As far at the dunes here , they are nice. People come from all over for them. Definitely not as big area as glamas and stuff, but it's beach sand not dirty mountain sand. If you were to make a trip from LA, I would do a week long trip and try to camp, or hotel and maybe do a day or two in Florence, a day or two at Winchester and a couple days at horsfall/hauser/spinreel/coos bay.

The local fabric store has it, call up an auto upholstery shop and ask them if they know where you can get headliner material. it's a soft stretchable fabric with 1/4" foam backing. it worked good, just used some good spray glue, lots of patience, and a ton of sharp razor knife blades. I did the roof first, then the rear window, then the sides. I cut the material extra big and cut down once glued in. I was able to tuck it in around the back window where the stock headliner cardboard holder thingy goes. I also glued it and folded it over on the front sides like you would a stock headliner. I definitely made some errors and would be able to do it twice as better a second time. works great for a Baja though. Hopefully filters some noise and it looks nice.

been along time... Well i'm street legal now Very Happy I did drive it to work one day. Everyone was oooohing and aaaahhhing over it. that felt nice. I threw an old ass 1835 in it with new pistons and cylinders. Took it out over labor day weekend to the sand. Did pretty good, but i think my main jets are too big. stilll was running rich and stumbled and missed alot until higher rpms. My buddy wrecked his baja into a dune within the 1st hour of being out there so i didn't see much sand in my baja after that. Had to pull him back to camp in 1st gear pinned the whole way, i think i got it kind of hot. I'll post pics of the carnage soon. that's it for now. I'm going to have to rebuild my front end soon, i'll post more later
