My buggy is not very impressive, but it goes where it needs to go.
Have another one I just bought in sad shape. Might part it out, might get it going.

Here's mine. Chenowth Explorer I put together after driving to San Diego to pick up the frame. Was going to sell it recently but started working on it and knew I would hate myself in the morning. Bunch of upgrades I want to do.

What is the name of this if i wanted to buy one?

Rinr's buggy is a Chenowth. I believe he sold it a while back. The original company went out of business some years ago. While there is a firm building buggies using the Chenowth name recently, as I understand the old frame designs are not being built now. But I believe you can buy the fiberglass.

The frame was a Berrien Sandfox 4 seater and the body I never figured out who made it, but it wasn't Berrien's body. |

The BODY on riNR's buggy is DEFINITELY Chenowth. He says the frame is Berrien Sandfox. Since Berrien based their buggy frames on the Chenowth design, not the same but very similar, the body fits well. But then one could also use Berrien fiberglass, or even for that matter, HiJumper body panels could probably be fit. I've seen a number of Berriens with HiJumper bodies. And the early HiJumper bodies and frames were imitations of Funco designs. So old Funco bodywork would fit too.
I believe replacement panels for Chenowth buggies are currently available from another company here in SoCal if anyone is seeking that style. _________________ Richard

Could also be from Larry's Off Road in Dayton, Ohio. They made a three piece body specific to the Berrien Sandfox. It has been a few years since I have seen one, but from what I remember it looks very similar. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Do you know any history on the red SS2?
I Tech inspected the Smith/Feldkamp car a number of times. Scott McKenzie did a great job building and prepping it. While it was racing, I was putting together my HiJumper you see in my avatar. I stopped by McKenzie's Offroad shop to buy some parts. When I told Scott that I had put on long shock towers to use 8" travel shocks, He said I shouldn't have bothered. He showed me how he got 10" of travel using reinforced stock towers and stock trailing arms with the stock lower shock mounts on the Smith/Feldkamp car. My car already had 10-1/4" with the 8" shocks on tall towers and stock lowers, and I figure the longer shocks provide more oil volume for more resistance to fade. I don't remember which shocks Scott had on that car to fit the stock mounts and get 10" of travel, but I'm sure it has nicer shocks now.
Scott cut off the pinch weld on the towers and used a length of 1" x 1/4" strap stock wrapped around the towers, and welded both sides to reinforce them. There were kits sold for many years for that wrap. That bar stock was pre-formed to fit. But it's very easy to bend straight stock to fit as you weld it to the tower. He also drilled the top mount bolt hole through for a 12mm through bolt instead of the factory tapered 10mm thread bolt.
Good luck in the NORRA 1000! |
you are correct. We built our new beam by copying the Scott McKenzie built beam on the Bel-Ray. We discovered that the front shocks were Bilstein rear shocks for an early VW Dasher.
Here you can see our finished beam

At the time I was talking about having visited Scott McKenzie's shop above, the ISS car still had a stock width beam, but otherwise looked a great deal like yours.
That's an interesting graphic you have on the visor (for those who don't know, the driver has to unlatch the lower edge of that visor and tip it up on the hinge on the top edge to enter and exit the cockpit). In the 1980s, I worked at ORE (Off Road Engineering) for a while, including when Malcolm Smith's 2-seat Volvo/Peugeot/Renault V6 was built. That car was raced in the US and Baja and in the Paris-Dakar as well. The owner of ORE was Greg Lewin, who had been the mechanic at McKenzie's working on Malcolm and Bud's car at the time of that visit. _________________ Richard
