I have one of the Blue Sea double USB outlets and the quality is nice as you would expect from them.
I had a pair of regular outlets and one got swapped out for the USB unit since the kids are always charging their phones, ipods and Kindles.
The second 12V outlet may get swapped out as well.

Has anybody installed a 12v outlet in the area behind the front passenger seat to power an Engel or similar fridge? Pics?

Here's where I put my fridge receptacle, on the corner cutout where you have another bracket for
a table. You probably could put one thru the battery box and have it flush with the wall. I went with
this socket from Walmart, its pretty rugged and has a spring loaded cover. When its not in use there
won't be anything falling into it.

I copied Dogpilot's idea from several years back and added a 12v outlet to the unused city water inlet - as John mentioned a few posts back. I've got it wired such that it's switched from inside, and only draws from the auxiliary battery. I set it up specifically to use a simple solar panel to charge the house battery through the socket if staying a while. Truth be told, I don't use the outlet too often. It's primarily used for simple 12v items like air pumps and Christmas lights. Anyway, it's a nice West Marine version with the cord lock feature. No problems whatsoever. And while I don't use it often, it's still far more useful to me than the city water feature that I've never used.

transformers won't work with D.C., only with an A.C.voltage.

Got the USB receptacle mounted up. Was just going to replace the West Marine cig socket with it,
but changed my mind. You can never have enough places to plug in! The one disappointing thing
about the USB outlet is that it will not change my Blackberry. And no I am not getting an I phone,
thank you very much!

Hi Tim,

I'm assuming you are not concerned about the parasitic draw because your solar panel is working 24-7?

That green LED really doesn't draw anything, and yes I am not concerned. I also have the Westy plugged
into shore power here at my house so the battery maintainers are constantly keeping a charge
going to the batteries. Where I have my Westy parked, not alot of good sunlight for the panel. It does
get some charge though.

The led draws 15 mA. There are 1000 mA in an amp so the draw is minimal.

For comparison, I run my ARB fridge off of the starter battery and it draws 1+ amps. On a recent 2 week trip there was never a day that starting up the truck was an issue.

I swapped this receptacle out for a Blue Seas brand one. The BS receptacle used in conjunction
with a Blue Seas 12v plug has the ability to lock into place. Though it truely wont lock to the point that
you couldn't just yank it out of the receptacle. You can but, just a causal knock on the plug and it won't come
loose.

Where are you getting the wires/power from to hook all these up?

I like them all, but wouldn't mind one by that vent, beside the fridge and/or the closet. Think it'd be easiest to get power off the auxiliary battery and go behind the stove?

Plus, of course that ashtray one, love that it's hidden! But, there isn't any power that I can think of over there. Through the back bench perhaps?

Tam, you have to run all these new wires to the point where the plug will be. For me my Aux Fuse Panel is
under the sink and that's where wires start from.

Hey,
I need help
Why do the generic USB chargers die when I plug them into my 12v socket in the Westy dash?
They work fine off a 12v power supply/jumper but the 12v dash outlet kills them.

Whats the amperage of the USB charger and is the outlet greater than it?

The device states
Input 12-16 VDC
Output .5V+4.2A
I'm guessing thats more than the marine grade socket I have in the dash?

The way I chose to run a new + wire was a minor PITA, (I'm sure there's a better way) but I installed a 12V outlet in the spice rack ~ midspan where wires for kitchen light pass through. Handy for my needs. Small things like AA charger can stay in spice rack and charge while on the road or I just plug in my crazy light or radio. Tends to keep the wires up out of the way.

Neil, did you just run off of the existing light wiring to connect the socket, or did you run fresh wiring + 5-10A fuse?

For those drilling into dashes or cabinetry, is there a certain type of tool you're using - hole saw on a drill? I'd like to put one in my dash while I have it out, but without making a total hack of it...
