Douginabug,

Thank you very much for this guide. I went by your pics and everything went great! No way I could have pieced it all together just by looking at the parts.

An extra thank your for the emphasis on eye protection, I had a few springs launch!

I am in the process of putting H4 lights in my 65 bus and have everything disassembled on my bench and was wondering how the springs go back in. Hopefully this thread will help!

Thanks.

I used your post as a guide for assy. of my headlight buckets. It was very informative. One thing that helped a great deal to keep them from moving was to use two vise grips diagonally across from each other. Only two springs launched. Before the vise grips, I couldn't get the first spring in at all. Just a hint for future use. Wink

Anyone know what the part number for this rubber spacer is at WW? I do not like their online catalog.

This set of stuff?
http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=111941147
That's all I could find on their site quickly.

Or maybe those are not included. If not, my local hardware store has lots of little rubber washers like that.

Thanks for looking, I saw those, don't think that's it... Looks like I'm going to Ace Hardware soon.

Take some measurements with you so you have an idea of what you need. Buying a "rubber washer" at a hardware store sounds real simple until you realize you don't have a clue as to what the dimensions are. Take it froM a guy who worked at one for eight years and had to take such customers through a guided tour of the store, showing them every washer we sold, several times a day.

Thanks Tim-
I've given some of those same store tours; I'll take one of the old ones with me...

Faced with the same challenge- I went to ACE and bought a foot of rubber hose (1/2" or 5/8" ID)- then experimented with slicing various thicknesses of "washers" until I found the perfect tension.

Good Idea!

Hey, we could sell these to WW as a sub-vendor!

The ad says 62 and back, but they sure do look like they might work. Should a 66 have these on the adjuster tab?

I wasn't paying a lot of attention when I took my passenger-side headlight apart but along with the tension spring being missing there were no tabs to hold the tension spring. They must have rusted off.

I guess I'll have to replace the whole part that the tabs rusted off of on my '66?

This act as a spacer only, right? Does it have to be rubber? How about Nylon? Isn't it just a pivot point that keeps the inner ring from rubbing on the outer housing?

Duginabug, you cemented your ACVW legacy w/this great post. Helped me put together the headlights for my '64 a couple of weeks back.

I have a question about them now, hope this isn't a highjack...I can't get the passenger side bucket to line up correctly in the fender socket, i end up w/a gap between the chrome ring and the fender bucket edge. Are the left & right buckets different? I thought they were interchangeable. And my chrome rings have the 2 and 8 pm screws - are those correct for a '64 Bug?

Thanks!

Victor

This post made my headlight reassembly go so smoothly. Thanks for all the great photos and tips! Laughing

BTW, I bought a used headlight bucket here on Samba that was already painted grey by the PO, and Rust-Oleum's Smoke Gray (7786) was a great match. Thanks to all for the paint color suggestions.

If it has VW units- Wolfsburg West. And they are simply called seals, not gaskets in parts searches.

Very good, easy to read and follow the instructions due to the excellent pictures. Thanks! I am totally inept at using tools, but even I was able to re-assemble my headlights!
