“Ray Donovan” actor Jay Thomas has lost his battle with cancer. He was 69.

The sad news comes from his agent and longtime friend Don Buchwald.

This meant nothing to me, until I Googled him.

Now if you'd said Carla from Cheers' husband Eddie LeBec, I'd have gotten it straight away.

Too bad.

He has a pretty extensive body of work. One of those guys you see in lots of things but don't necessarily know his name, but know the face.

His first TV role was in "Mork and Mindy". Then on to LA radio as the #1 jock at Power 106, The Ensemble Theater Group, and recurring on "Cheers" as Carla's ice hockey playing husband. He won two Emmy awards for portraying Jerry Gold on"Murphy Brown". He starred in his own TV shows "Married People" with Beth Armstrong and "Love and War" with Susan Dey and later Annie Potts. He appeared as a leading guest star in dozens of sitcoms, cop shows, and MOW's opposite Judith Light, John Tuturro, and Christine Lahti. On the big screen he was featured in "Mr. Holland's Opus", "A Smile Like Yours", and "Santa Claus" 2 and 3. Returning to the stage he starred in plays written and directed by Wendy Wasserstein and Woody Allen. Recently he has hosted shows at Carolines in NYC and the Bellagio in Vegas. He guest starred in an episode of "Hung" on HBO. He won the best actor for and was a co-writer of best comedy at the LA iTV Fest for "Talker". And the Jay Thomas talk show airs daily on SiriusXM

Tobe Hooper, the horror director best known for helming “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” and “Poltergeist,” died Saturday in Sherman Oaks, Calif., according to the Los Angeles County Coroner. He was 74. The circumstances of his death were not known.

A sad day for Idaho. Cece Andrus was a good man, and a good friend of my boss. It has been said he never forgot a name.

A very sad day indeed to lose a champion of preservation for future generations. So sorry to lose this statesman (not a
politician...)
More poignant is that his replacement to President Carter's interior secretary by Ronald was James Watt, listed as one of the top ten worst Presidential appointies, an anti- environmentalist. He is famous for banning the Beach Boys from playing on the fourth of July as a bad influence. Little did he know that Ronnie loved them... Huh. He also described a committee under his control as "a black, a woman, two Jews, and a cripple".
You can't make this stuff up. Check for yourselves.
Man, we have lost a lot over the years Sad

Here is my boss's letter to the local paper regarding Cecil Andrus. Of note is the fact that my boss is in a wheelchair after being struck with polio as a child. The typo errors were fixed before print, and a few other small things were changed.

I had the great opportunity to support Andrus in my last year of college when he opposed the White Clouds mining operation as unneeded. It was a debacle waiting to happen. He won the election and history was made. Andrus was one of four legitimate statesman Idaho has had. He said in his office one time with Bonner counties own Merle Parsley and me, "all these damned politicians". I said Governor, "you seek statesman, you get politicians". He looked at me and said, " I like that, can I use it? I replied "of course, I don't think Winston Churchill will mind". He was exceptional in many respects, his memory is what most folks comment on. I have seen it in action many times. One stands out. I was attending a 'wienie roast' fund raiser on a small horse operation in Eagle, Idaho. Andrus was late. When he arrived he walked around the pasture 'glad handing' about eighty or so guests, calling each by name. At the end of these rounds, he walked over to a small hay stack where an old German Shepard was sleeping on some gunny sacks, he got down on one knee and petted the scruffy old dog and said, "Sarge, how ya doin". He had met the dog once, twelve years earlier. His charisma, honesty and decency shan't soon be matched.

Wow, I read only yesterday that he was going into hospice care so I knew things were bad, but not this bad. Sad to see him gone--that Villanova run through the playoffs is one for the ages.

A local radio news guy worked for him long ago and recommended this video, very funny.

Shelley Berman, the wildly popular "sit-down" comic of the late 1950s and '60s who, after his career came unhinged following an outburst caught on camera, concentrated on acting and played Larry David's father on Curb Your Enthusiasm, has died. He was 92.

A standout in a golden era of comedy that included other observational masters like Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce and Bob Newhart, Berman died early Friday morning at his home in Bell Canyon, Calf., according to a post on his official Facebook page. He had a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
