That's pretty much it. Wink How much will you pay for doubt now?

well if the doubt is vintage maybe it has more value? does doubt attain patina? Wink Laughing

Fake or real, they'd look nice on my garage wall or as a display with my kombi, as long as the price reflects the product does it matter?

Now a can of worms has been opened. People who thought they had real signs are worrying they're fakes and the people are making fakes to sell as genuine ones know now how to make their signs that little bit harder to determine as a fake. It's like the 100,000 badges, they get better and better till eventually only a few seasoned experts such as 53 oval know how to tell them apart.

there could be a bright side, the average price of signs may go down now, because it's going to be much more difficult to authenticate one.

[end of ramble]

Here is what I see:

These signs were not made from the same artwork. The VW logo is slightly different, most noticeably the V-W gap. Second, the DIENST is way different with a different S altogether. The grommets are different as well. Not the same sign for sure.

Gibbs, how do you know the bottom sign is real? The font on the address sign does not match the DIENST above it, different E, different S and on my monitor the blue and white colors between the signs are different.

Jeff,
I just talked this over with one of the biggest sign collectors in the world (from SoCal), who's been doing this for decades. You know him. He says both signs are real, only one's later than the other.

The top one is around late '60ies, the bottom one probably 10-15 years earlier. In those 10-15 years the details could have changed like the gap in the logo and the differences in the font. He's got several signs in his collection too with plastic grommets, logo's with large gaps and font differences. One of them is dated 1970.

kai, if i found four of the same signs within a short period of time in a very similar condition, i would be a little inquisitive about the authenticity, wouldn't you?

More information for comparison:

This sign has the following features which make it seem more "real" than the suspicious sign:

Real argument:
1. V-W gap is 2.5% per specification.
2. The manufacturers mark is screened on the front: "Emaillierwerk Hannover Weldondorf"
3. DIENST font is consistent within the text and the S is not tweaked. See how the flags of the S are cropped vertically.
4. Wear, chips and rust consistent with an old sign. Deep pitted rust on the back side (versus the flash rust like on the chevron sign shown above).

I didn't check the whole thread to see if this one is already here, but I've had it around the shop for a number of years.

This is probably the best place to ask this question, I know its not and enamel sign but its still a vw sign.

I bought this recently mainly because of how interesting it is, it was hung in a dealership in the south of Melbourne during the late sixties and was then trimmed and used in the seventies. Has anyone seen the 'G' vw logo before?

Hi everybody!

I have one of these - but in better condition - that I have owned for +10 years. Definitely original, not a reproduction.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/896003.jpg
The sign is obviously a Swedish sign from the beginning and I think I have a fair understanding of the market value here in Sweden (circa 500USD/400EUR ish), but is there also an international collectors market for these, and would it be worth me putting it up for sale here/eBay?

A bit of a daft question i know, but I've owned the sign for ages (traded it for an OG gasburner wheel. Not sure who came out on top from that deal now:) ) and I just can't see myself hanging it up again anytime soon. I've moved flats a number of times since it was last up, and it's never found a good place to hang. I don't want to hang it in the garage as my garage is more of a dungeon/workshop than a mancave Smile

What's the going rate on one of these? I will get some pictures up for you aficionados as well Smile

Some more cool signs:

From left to right:
Netherlands - Netherlands - Italy - Netherlands - Belgium
Only the 2nd from the right isn't enamel.

Said to come from Parry Sound Ontario Canada. Pretty beat up but interesting "Authorized" wording. I have not seen this style?

Whats the deal? Did dealerships get "VW SERVICE" and garages that were
trained in the black air cooled arts get "vw AUTHORIZED service"

or

A fake taken way too far in the distressing department?

Picked the large parts sign up locally yesterday to keep the smaller sign company.
