Today was a good day in bug hunting for me, heard about a bug through a guy at work. Turned out to be a very good find,'63 Convertible. Dragged it home today along with some extra stuff.
Lots to learn as this is my first convertible. _________________ "Dammit, every time we have a sweet idea the government has to come and screw it up"-Kyle Broflowski

She's a '67 and a bit of a stretch.....
15 years ago I used to drive this for a friend's limousine company. I haven't talked family or seen the car in about 13 years. I've been keeping my eyes open for it for about 5 years now. I heard it had be sold to another owner.....Well I found it. Here she is home in my driveway:
Now I need 2 sets of floor pans and 2 sets of heater channels! _________________ Cheap, fast, reliable - Pick your 2! |

I've got a habbit of owning "oddball" VW's. We used the bug for our wedding 15 years ago. The LT we imported from Germany in 2012. _________________ Cheap, fast, reliable - Pick your 2! |

Just picked up this 64 sunroof. It came into work after sitting a few years. The owner decided he no longer could take care of it, and it needed more work than he wanted to put into it, so I made an offer. It needs floors, heater channels, and some quarter repair, but over all it is super solid and complete. It was running a bit rough after sitting at work, a set of points later its running great. I'm not going to do too much more to it until I pull the body off at this point.

Not much for the hunt.. The are all pretty sad carcasses needing either rescuing--or they just need to suffer their destiny of scrap... The one that hurts the most of the lowlight Ghia.. If only I knew of this place when the car was first brought into the yard...
(this front bumper is nearly perfect--aside from the chrome..)

Friday(10/03/2014) was a good day for me, picked this 64 up with a rebuilt dp 1600 for $1500. Firs thing I checked were the pans and heater channels, I didn't want to go through changing the pans like I did to my daughter's 69.

I don't know if you could call it a "hunt". As I found it here on the Samba. But it was a long exhausting few months looking on here and about 12 other websites about once every 15 minutes day and into the night. Countless phone calls. And trips as far as the border.
I have to mention Oldbug.com even though I didn't end up buying from his site. Randy prices his cars really fairly. And goes over them with a detail you rarely see. And with copious pics. I missed out on his white sunroof '66 by one day.
Which is one of the only reasons I trusted buying this car from out of state - the owner took a large amount of good photos. And pointed out all the good, the bad, and the ugly. I also had it gone thru by Schmitt in North Seattle before settling on a price of $7500. Which was pretty fair. Considering all the junk I looked at priced at 10k or more.
But anyway, I take delivery of my black on red type 1 '67 this coming Tuesday. I plan to ditch the white walls for some black Nexens, put full bumpers back on it from WW, put the proper aluminum window trim on the front and back from WW, sound deaden it with second skin and ez cool, put a new off white interior in it (custom shop here in LA), and change out all the dash components with either grey or ivory. Can't decide. I'm open to opinions. But basically I want to take it back to a more stock looking ride. It's also missing a couple leaf springs in the front that I plan to put back in as well. And some new oil shocks. I also might have the dash hole fixed if it's to big for a stock radio. Will have to wait until it gets here to figure out if I can shim one in or not. But it does look cut. Which was the only bummer about the car.
Then I did some research and found the guy that actually restored the car and built the motor. He's a professional engine builder in WA state. Named Tim Hancock. (I posted his business card below.) And low and behold it doesn't have a 1500 in it like everyone thought - it has a 1600cc single port in it! Made me so happy. I was already pleased with the car and the deal I got. But to have the added bonus of the actual engine I wanted in the first place. Was fantastic! He rebuilt it and sold it about 500 miles later. Then the owner between he and I sat the car in a garage for 10+ years. So it's pretty much a new rebuild/restore.
I'm very pleased to say the least. I was looking for a beige car. As every car I've owned in the last couple decades has been black. And wanted to get away from having to wash it so much to keep it looking good. But then I decided I better just buy the best car I can find for the least amount of money. And I actually like black. I was just hoping to get away from some of the maintenance. But it will be a sweet ride once I get those clown tires off of there. And put the full bumpers back on. I think the tires are just a little to big. And with the rims painted white they look even bigger. Don't get me wrong I love me some whitewalls on the right car in the right size. But these just don't seem to do the car justice.
I can't wait for Tuesday to come. I'm like a kid in a mail order candy store!
This is what it used to look like three owners ago:
Here's the guys card:
