Beautiful car! Any updates? |
It's been a year. A very busy year. A death in the family caused us to move from Newport down to Oceanside. Something I've wanted to do for many years anyway. Got a 3 car garage now.
The bug is pretty much the same. I changed the seat belt mounting at the bottom to allow more room for stuff.
Tore apart the engine and put new Steve Tims heads on, as well as dual Weber 44's. Significant increase in power, lower head temps and the 1 time I checked, gained 5 mpg on the freeway. Not too bad! Still have some work to do on the jetting, but I drive it to work regularly, 60 mile round trip.
I didn't like the Kennedy Stage 1 clutch for a DD (wife really didn't like it) so I put in a Sachs pressure plate with a CopperHead disc. It hooks up hard, but the pedal is still very stiff. Replaced the cable again. Bowden tube has a good dip in it. Everything is smooth, just too stiff. I need to dig into the tunnel and see if the tube has broken off and causing issues. I don't think it is, though. I tried the longer clutch arm from Bruce too. It helped a bit, but mostly made it harder to adjust the freeplay.
Bought a '63 Beetle to become my daily driver (just sold my MINI). Just put a 1600 SP and later trans in it. Drives good, just have to work on the cosmetics a bit.
Once things start to smooth out again, I'll get back to the cage work and boxed arms, etc., so I can go BEAT IT!
Also, anyone in the area...come hang out on Saturday nights at the IN-N-OUT on the 76 between Douglas and College. There is a great group of guys and a few girls too. There could be 3 cars or 15, you never know.
Usually start showing up after 7 pm and leave 10-10:30.

Here's a shot of the freshened up engine. I have since changed the oil filler to the angled type, ditched the blue wires for Bosch wires and moved the coil on top of the case.
I cut some access panels for carburetor adjustment. I have some curved aluminum doors that bolt on too.
Been to Pismo a few times too.

Sweet build. Great job on the roof rack. I'm thinking about getting one made for my Baja. |

Awesome bug . What kind of tires do you have on the front? |
All the info is in here. Tires are from Pep Boys. Dakota or Definity?
BTW...change your avatar! This is the VW forum, put a pic of your Super up!
As far as the '63 goes...all stock for this one. Mostly stock anyway. You know I can't leave stuff alone. _________________ (ignore the X's ) |

Got some newer pictures. I've just been driving it and playing with the white car.
I did make some nice clamps that hold the oil lines together and bolt to the roof to replace all the zip ties seen in these pics.
Before anyone asks, I wish they were, but they're NOT my burnouts

x2 a car you should be very proud of. when ever a class 11 style car is brought up on the forum, your build is one that everyone refers to. |

Tail lights fit like crap, but they look the same as the day I bought the car.
As for wiring up the Hellas, it's on the "to do" list still. I never found switches that I liked. When I do get them finished it will be done with a second fuse block with its own power wire from the battery. I'll move the radio wire to the new block too.
You just might see it in the classifieds pretty soon too. Still on the fence, but I think I want a THING for my next toy. Can't decide how much to ask for it either. _________________ (ignore the X's ) |

Very clean car bud.....it is turning out great. I'm debating on turning my 69 into a 11 clone and I have a couple questions. What kind of mileage are you seeing as it sits and the other is what is the height of your car to the top of the roof rack. I want to throw my car in my toy hauler and I would like to do it without taking the rack off. Thanks and once again great job on the car.
