So far pretty good, I might have to buy/rent a plane just so I remember how to fly though! _________________ Alte Schule Vintage and Performance VW club

Haha I bet, what with all that fly-by-wire and automation. If you're ever in PA, come fly my Cherokee; you really have to haul that thing and its enormous square wing around!
Have you flown any aircraft in the new 'banana' livery yet? _________________ 1970 Savannah Beige Beetle - Volksy

Definitely! Haven't flown a Cherokee in a bazillion years so you'll have to teach me again! No haven't flown the Banana planes yet but I should soon _________________ Alte Schule Vintage and Performance VW club

I spent all summer flying a 180 Super Cub in Ocean City, MD. That was a lot of fun, 250' off the water going down the beach with a banner. Ended up flying 440 hours over the season.

Wow, I've always wanted to do that! I always loved watching those planes at the beach when I was just a little guy.
Does the aircraft fly much differently with the banner? _________________ 1970 Savannah Beige Beetle - Volksy

The plane doesn't fly much differently with a banner, just slower and the stall speed is reduced considerably. _________________ "Veedubers is some strange folk." Bob Hoover

I took this photo last night at 800 feet AGL over Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It was totally awe-inspiring.

All,
I've been flying for almost 20 years. I'm coming up on 4000 hours with most of that time in the C-5. I'm hoping to get my 5000 hour patch before I retire. I've also got a lot of time in the T-37 and T-6 teaching young Airmen how to fly.
Check out the C-5M in the mighty planes videos below. It's been fun bringing that new version into its own. We just set a new AMC record by carrying 280,880 lbs of cargo on one flight!

Fred flies like a dream. The new engines make all the difference in the world. What's cool about flying for the Air Force is we get to do tactical flying and air refueling. _________________ 1967 21 Window Bus

Awesome thread! I wondered how many other aviators there were on here. I'm a pilot/A&P. Did some bush flying in Belize, Central America for several years in my Murphy Rebel. Before that I was a line mechanic with Spirit Airlines before they finished switching over to the Airbuses that 71sbeetle above has a pic of.
Flying a plane, and driving an air-cooled VW are similar. In the back of your mind you've always got a plan of action for when the engine stops running or the brakes fail. _________________ "There are many brilliant and profound quotes out there....but this isn't one of them" |

I got my SEL rating while going to SJSU for an Aeronautics degree back in the mid 1980's. The flying club had three planes. An older 150, a newer 152, and a pretty nice 172. I flew them all. The 150 was $22.50/hour wet while the 152 was $25 and the 172 was $34. The good old days. I already had my A&P which I earned in 1983. Lots of fun and adventure. Shortly after finishing college I got hired by a major airline and started having kids. I couldn't afford to stay current so I gave up flying. Always said that if I ever win the lottery I'd get back into it. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

A pic I took this summer landing runway 20 in Skagway, AK. Had a blast flying up there, miss it most days. _________________ "Veedubers is some strange folk." Bob Hoover

It's been a long time since I last posted here an probably longer since I've flown. I've since traded the yoke for a seat inside the CH-47 Chinook helicopter and occasionally go flying in them. Being in the military and constantly going from place to place, I don't have the time or means to fly anymore. But enjoy flying in helicopters in the Army. I plan on resuming flying as recreation once I'm out of the military, but until then I'll be enjoying the view as a passenger!
Edit: last time I posted here looks like 2011. I made a mistake of chasing a girl after high school and never did attend CWU. Nor did I ever wind up attending Everett CC in the mean time.
I wound up joining the Army almost two and a half years ago as a 15U CH-47 Chinook helicopter mechanic so I could still enjoy my love for being in the air coupled with fixing the helicopters I occasionally fly in. I've since married and enjoy being in the Army. I haven't flown in years and often wonder where I'd be had I followed through and pursued becoming a commercial pilot. But I'm not a crew chief on the CH-47 but fly often enough to get the same joy I did when I flew the cessna. Glad to see this thread is still around and I hope to fly again someday once my time in the service is up! _________________ PNW Dub Folk & Kitsap dub Folk (KdF)

Ooo ooo I do I do! I'm just a plane ole (pun intended) private pilot and just fly for fun however I do have my tail wheel endorsement so I'm able to legally fly a lot of the older classics. Here's the plane I fly the most. It's a home built design from the late '60s. It's powered by a Continental C-85, cruises at 115 mph, and has two seats. The part I find most amazing about it is that it is a scratch built plane, they never made a kit with all the parts that you just bought and assembled. The builder actually had to find and fabricate every single part on it, and he did that with the utmost care and attention to detail. It took him just over 8 years from start to finish. If only I had that kind of patience...

Is that a Wittman Tailwind? I read an article about them several years ago and have been fascinated by them since.
My dad is nearing completion of a scratch built Zenith 701. _________________ "Veedubers is some strange folk." Bob Hoover

Well not really its called a Daphne and it was based off the wittman tailwind design but the designer wanted a plane that cruised at a lower speed (why I don't know - speed is king hehehe!) and also had a slower landing speed. And admins I'm sorry about the pictures I couldn't figure out where to post them so I put them in the site folder. I see now everyone else is using third party storage. I just took my first flying lesson last week. I have a coworker who's a pilot instructor, so he took me up. Had a great time with my son too!
