Hey, I was wondering if anyone is still following this thread?
Since it’s the only aviation thread in town, thought I’d
Come back and ask a question. Not trying to “hijack” the thread
Or anything.
Friend of mine came through town the other day. Just back from visiting his son in Chicago who is an air traffic contoller, and
also a pilot. My friend is a pilot as am I ( private, S.E.L. and I have an A&P)
So as you might expect we got to yakkin’ about the current uproar over the sleeping tower air controllers. After three or four beers we
Finaly got the situation figured out. Wondered what pilots here
might think.
According to my friends son, the handful of guys caught sleeping
Is probably the tip of the iceburg. He thinks there probably many more, just not caught.
He believes the current work schedule needs adjustment to keep controllers from being jerked around from days to nights without time to adjust.
Another thought from him, that I agree with, why have so many
Tower controlled airports after midnight? With very low traffic numbers at night at some airports, why not close the tower and
Operate as an uncontrolled airport from midnight to six in the morning. We have at least one airport in our local area that does that. The tower closes at 11 and resumes operation at 0700 in the morning.
Across the country there are hundreds of uncontrolled ( no tower)
Airfields that operate quite safely year after year. Some of these fields have more than two runways, automated terminal information service, and in some cases features like when you click the mic button on certain frequencys it brings up runway lights, turns on features like VASI and so forth.
When that air ambulance flight into Reno failed to contact the tower, that basically what he did. Called his positions and landed
as if it was an uncontrolled field.
Wondered what anyone else that’s a pilots thinks of this. |

That's the correct procedure in that situation.
I think that the issue of sleeping controllers is media hype. A controller isn't going to go to sleep if they are handling traffic in close proximity and I don't think that it is unheard of for one to nod off during slack hours. It's not as though the airplanes fall out of the sky if ATC doesn't respond!! |

Hey George, I agree with you one hundred percent on the media hype thing. I was gonna mention that in my post.
The way they describe it. The non-flying public
( like some ones old grandma for example) is terrified. Thinking
their stuck in the air forever or something. They don't cover both sides of the story. Much more drama just to hype the snoozing controller. |

I started studying for my written this week. I am in the military and am currently not in the country so I can't start my flying yet. One of my Lts Is a CFI and after a few beers and some talking he said he would give me lessons for free as long as I pay for the plane. I am so pumped. My brother is also in the process of getting his. He is going through a program at Ohio University. Its all thanks to our dad who took us flying when we were little kids. He is also the reason we have VWs. |

Glad to find this pilot's thread!
I'm in the helicopter business. We own a Hiller UH12E that we do aerial application with (crop dusting), cherry drying, frost control, and soon to be external load work. This will be my second year of being an ag pilot, but have been working with helicopters for about 10-11 years. My A&P test is coming this month. Wish me luck...
It's a love/hate relationship at times, but it's been a fun road. You never know where you'll be, or what you will be doing next!

got my student license in 2004.
solo'd at 11 hours. got 30 hours logged before i had to stop flying due to family/financial reasons. i keep my AOPA and EAA membership active.... in hopes that i will be able to renew my flight training.
was flying Cessna 150's out of Adel, GA (15J). since then, the FBO has come under new management and all of the aircraft traded/sold.
like any, i have my dreams. i'd love to build my own. maybe a Sonex. the RV12 is out of my financial reach... as is everything at this point. |

Using my Tomahawk to further my VW World
Images from several years ago loading up parts from Greg and Clara in Olympia WA to fly back down to Santa Rosa CA where I keep the plane -and my vast VW trash hangared. Am a Pilot for fun and convenience, an A&P for employment and am currently a contractor in Kandahar working on grey painted aluminum Would STRONGLY recommend all mechanics and pilots with good records and prior service willing to live through hardship to investigate contract work.
Here's Clara and one of hundreds of buses she and Greg have rescued over the years. She helped me load the plane with about 150lbs of VW cargo. I remove the seat for missions like this. Tomahawks, 150s and 152s are all easily had for under $20k...
Here's a flying scene I shot flying from Billings MO to Vancouver with my then new cat Blue, whom I adopted in MO. Damn great cat! Huge and smart! Next stop on this particular leg was KEAT, which was coincidental, because the day I shot this was actually Thanksgiving! VFR on top, 11,000 feet (notice the CDI and data on the LORAN). Keep on flying!

Hey guys, took up the 172 last week and snapped some pictures with my uncle. I had to stop flight training for some time but I'm back in the game and have my checkride scheduled in early June! Harvey Field just picked up a new Cessna 172SP and I really want to take it up! Also I'm helping pay for a reupholstery of my plane and will be posting pictures along the way! I did get into CWU's aviation program, and despite the 3.2 graduating gpa, I was not accepted into the school. So now I'm gearing up for a career as an aircraft mechanic. _________________ PNW Dub Folk & Kitsap dub Folk (KdF)

Picked up my instrument rating today, took me just under six months. I have 112 hours total time now, and will start building time for my commercial. _________________ "Veedubers is some strange folk." Bob Hoover

I'm enrolled in school to pursue both my passions. I'm starting at Everett CC in the fall to get my Part 147 Air Frame & Power Plant license. I decided awhile ago that becoming a commercial pilot wasn't what I wanted..So I decided that the combination of being a mechanic and working on aircraft would be perfect. We have labs inside the Boeing Facility in Everett and in 2 years, I will be a certified aircraft mechanic! _________________ PNW Dub Folk & Kitsap dub Folk (KdF)

That's great news Patterbon
I would similarly like to work as a mechanic someday, but I didn't grow up learning about engines and have a hard time grasping and understanding certain things nowadays. But who knows, I might be able to make it happen someday. _________________ Loving my 1970 Beetle.

I've absolutely loved aviation since I could consciously think (literally, one of my first words was 'airplane'), and have been flying since the age of 12. Now that I'm 17, I'm proud to say that I've earned my Private Pilot's license! It was a difficult road, but it's truly worth it to be able to fly where and when I want. In fact, I'm now pursuing an NROTC scholarship to be a U.S. Naval Aviator.
Here are some godawful photos of my 1965 Piper PA-28-180 Cherokee, N8240W. It may not be the prettiest bird in the world, but it's stable as a rock and climbs like a homesick angel. Plus, it's an airplane, so it's got that going for it!
