What did I do? Wish I still had it. Sold it to a family member in need.

All low maintenance stuff...

Installed chrome dipstick.

Installed new jeep wrangler wiper blades.

Tried to start, and realized I still need to install new starter.

Went to see it to the shop. My guy was a either a middle or a top Volkswagen mecanic/body shop guy and he's good at it.

The tinted windows are gone, so is the strange cross it had under the fuel tank lid. The door panels are going to be replaced, the engine removed so they can paint that side of the car. There was some rust under the paint, a few spots I missed when I bought it, but the body shop guy told me it is in great shape. I'm still a few weeks away from having it -I asked him to check everything: hoses, wires, valves, brakes, transmission, interiors...

I'll drop by today and take pictures.

Pulled out the drivers side heater channel for replacement. Not a whole lot left of the old one.

Drove it to work today, drove it home.

Jumped it both times, still need to replace the starter. I'll get to it...

Went to the shop to see it. Guy tells me it should be done by the end of the week. There was some unseen damage, but nothing else is in that condition. Seats should be refurbished tomorrow-friday the latest and even the gas tank and boot is getting some pain.

Filled up the tank!

Also, drove to work, Scottish ethnic food emporium, and back home again.

Replaced the vacuum lines on my DVDA distributor. I just got the car, I have no idea how old they were, but they were rock hard and I'm guessing leaky because WOW does it run better!

Put in a mechanical fuel guage. Tired of the cheap aftermarket electrical ones failing on me.

It really is easy to take the engine out all by yourself!
Now the fun begins...

Brake lines and brakes on 3 of 4 wheels. Was lamenting the loss of my master cylinder pushrod when I remembered where I put it....2 years ago when this all started. And there it was! One less thing I need to buy.

My Super got all new tie rods, plus a steering damper and steering damper bushing which pretty much completes the front end rebuild. Hasn't been aligned yet but I've never felt the steering so tight...and no shakes for the first time. While under there I realized that until I start tackling rust problems, the Beetle is a fair-weather car only (which is fine given the wipers stopped working a while back).

Also did a full tune-up...despite several minor oil leaks my motor is still going strong at 208k miles. Finally got around to fixing the fuel evaporative system as well, I'd like to get the charcoal tank and all hooked up and working again sometime but for now I'm happy to not have gas fumes in the cabin.

did my first ever brake fluid change... ended up in blackface due to all the crawling on the garage floor and punched myself in the face trying to open a stuck valve, but other than that it went like a charm.

however...
5 years ago I had the rear brakes rebuilt by VW so I assumed all the fluid was that age. well, rear circuit fluid was amber-colored wile front was as black as ink... apparently shop people did only bleed the rear circuit. Confused well now it's all brand new and crystal-clear bosch DOT-4. Cool

Replaced my starter.

Three words.

Six hours.

Still had original starter and woodruff key (that weird bolt looked brand new.)

Two or three new lessons learned.

1. Despite having done this job before on a different bug, it wasn't any easier.

2. P blaster doesn't seem to last too long if not kept in a well regulated environment.

3. New freeze off stuff is interesting. Combo of that and a small torch like lighter may have helped, but...

4. The job is ultimately limited to how good your tools are. Broke one 17 mm socket on a lug.

5. Breaker bar. Revenge for those of us lacking at tools. Slow and steady with this, otherwise lug nuts wear down.

6. Easy to get distracted with other things repairs while your car is up on a jack stand.

Ultimately, it all worked after hooking it back up. Success. I'll take it

Kyle

Replacing the vacuum hoses on my wife's fuel-injected '76 SB Convertible.

Man, I wish someone sold a silicone hose kit for this! All the hoses from the auto parts stores are so thick and heavy.
