The first car I ever drove was a 1931 Model AA Ford stake-bed truck, on a filbert (hazelnut) orchard belonging to friends of my family. I was 10 years old, and I mastered retarding the spark and driving a stick early on. As for driving anything, I started driving my grandfather's 1928 Fordson tractor at the age of 6 and my uncle's Cushman Super Eagle motor scooter at the age of 8.

Dad's 71 super beetle. It blew the #3 spark plug out of the block so he parked it. My friend and I would drive it up and down my driveway, stealing gas from the lawn mower. Here she is in all her glory....

My dad taught me to drive his 69 Karmann Ghia when I was 14. I used to sneak it out for quick joyrides after school. Unfortunately he passed away, but I still have that car.

'73 Super Beetle. I learned how to drive stick in it and used it for high school transportation. About three weeks after I graduated it got sideswiped on the passenger side by someone in a Honda while on the highway. It was still drivable, but I had to sell it since I didn't have the money to fix it. Sad I miss that bug.

Probably the 1950's Ford 8N tractor at the grandparents' farm. It was easier to see in front of and easier to reach the pedals than cars. I was probably under ten years old then. Next was the family's 57 Bug which I still have, as soon as I could reach the pedals. Dad would let the kids take it out into the farm fields and if we were brave, we could get it into third gear before coming up fast on a fenceline Exclamation It was just a few months ago that I pounded out some dents in the floorpan that I put in there one day while joyriding in the field when I suddenly came upon a few logs that were hidden in the grass. Scared the bejeezes out of me and I was sure I had destroyed the car. Dad took a look at it, shrugged it off and said, don't worry I'm sure it's OK. Cool

I learned to drive a stick shift in our '75 orange/white bus. The first time I drove was my dad's brand new '66 Mustang GT with a 289 CID/271 HP v8. Okay, I was 3 and sitting in his lap steering and my mother saw the car veering down the street and thought he was having a seizure!

not sure what the laws in cali are, but can't you get your learners permit in cali at age 15? i think here in GA you can at 15, but you need to passa class or something, or else you have to wait till 18 or something like that, i don't remember. I'm 21 so i don't care to pay attention to stuff like that, lol.
