My dad had a 1952 Chevy with Powerglide when we lived in Chicago. When I was 15, I was getting my jacket out of the closet and brushed against one of his and heard some keys jangling. He was out of town for a bowling tournament and my mom was out visiting some friends. Never to let an opportunity like this slip by, I called my friend Jimmy and told him to come over to the house, that I had a surprise.....the keys to my dad's car.

We got in and I just had to show off to some high school buddies that lived a good 5 miles away. Drove over there and we all went for a ride. So far, so good. After they got out, I had to turn around in an intersection to aim towards home. Couldn't make it in one swing and had to back up. I put her in reverse and floored it. The car shot backwards like a jet, right into a huge, wooden telephone pole. Cracked the bumper in half and caved in some of the trunk. "Shit, we better get this sled home, Jimmy."

Maybe dad would believe someone smashed into his car while it was parked from the rear. Yeah, that's it. That'll work....I thought. On the way home, I'm driving on this street with street car tracks in the middle. It's kind of narrow and this car starts going around me on the left. I move to the right as much as possible so he can get around. I moved too much. I sideswiped a parked car with the right rear fender, caving it in. It was on a street with some bars and guys hanging on the sidewalk, and I can still see the looks on their faces as they heard and saw me do the side-swipe and just keep on going. Now we better really get back home, Jimmy.

I'm still O.K., I thought. Dad will get in the car to go to work in the morning, won't notice the damage, park in the lot at work, and when he comes out, he'll figure that some idiot crashed into him in the parking lot while he was working. Yep, I actually thought (desperately hoped) that it would go down that way and I'd squeek by out of another stupid caper.

When I heard dad leave, I got out of bed and snuck to the window to watch him just drive off to work. Instead, I saw dad doing a walk-around and eye-balling the damage. I was screwed for sure now. Got grounded for a pretty long while. Luckily my dad didn't believe in beating the shit out of me, so I didn't suffer any permanent damage.

Chris Jobe's '67 Panel last year.

Very Happy

That, and that drive alone, got me so much more into the hobby. As we speak, I'm trying yet again to make money to buy my first VW. No doubt gonna be a Splt Bus.

The motor was rebuilt after so idiot left the carb's air filter off with no deck lid on, so the motor froze with rust in the pistons, crank and heads but nothing wrong with the case so we just rebuilt it and weld some rust spots in the floors. Every single detail on and in the car is original except the motor and a few patches of metal and is now my daily driver

My mistake.

'71 Squareback, Kansas Beige. Also happened to be the car I was brought home from the hospital in when I was born. My uncle's car at the time, dad had borrowed it for some reason. 15 years later mom had it. And since the statute of limitations is up several times over, I can admit to how easy it was to unscrew the odometer cable in those cars and go for a quick joy ride without getting caught. The party ended when the Wagonator was t-boned by a Clark Pest Control truck. (legit driving on my part that time, thank goodness!)
