Thought I would share these photos from my collection.
This is the cockpit of the rear hatch bus in the next photo. Looks like this guy has got it "tricked out" with extra gauges, turn signal switch, radio and other accessories.
Here the owner takes care on a little maintenance on the cargo door. Check the extra large reflectors.
This is from an auto show. The display dude looks pretty happy and is one of the original black sock mafia members. Check the reclining middle seat and the storage drawers under the rear seat.
Here is a wider view of the same bus. Notice that the bus has been outfitted with deluxe molding, including the bumpers and vent trim. The chrome hubcaps has the matte finish centers...yet to be done properly on any restorations (to date).

Looks like a washer bottle next to the dash
does that mean it also has windshield washer jets?
never seen that on a barndoor. |

very cool . love all these old photos you come up with Jeff.
strange bus this one. even notice the deluxe uprights in the rear luggage area.
regarding the matte finish on the hubcaps, couldnt the inset be blasted with something mild like soda or fine glass you think? i wouldnt think it would be difficult to get that texture. trial and error i guess. _________________ www.thebustransfer.com

Hey Mark, glad you like the pics. The hubcaps for my bus have the matte finish. Mark L. had the chrome shop do it right. |

I thought the "matt finsh" was just sand or wire brush marks were the hub cap was preped for the paint around the vw.
I have a set of deluxe caps with the dull finsh around the vw looks just like it was wire brushed . |

It may have been wire brushed, but just about all period photos show chrome caps with a dull center...regardless of whether they have painted logos or not. The dull section looks to have been masked off as well. It doesn't appear that the dull era is feathered like if would be if it was just haphazardly hit with a wire brush.
The camper in these photos looks to have been repainted and the chrome caps don't look like they have painted logos. |

Maybe they just preped all early hubcaps for painted centers back then,
so some show up with out the paint but still have dull centers |

Looking at the cargo floor mat, this bus is a 50 (or early 51).
Do you know where the bus is from ? Any picture with the license plate ?
I'm curious cause my 50 also has some period deluxe moldings, and deluxe vent trims...
Thanks |
