This is a fun fact. After different cross matching part numbers the front shoes for barndoor brakes are the same as Porsche 944 for the late 70's to early 80's rear. One hole needs to be drilled for a spring but other than that they fit.

Even more fun facts ... they are the same as Super Beetle and Thing rears.... Wink with the need to drill out the same hole. I've bought them for $10 a set and worked great on my bus... Cool

Great job on the bus! Looking good! Very Happy

Had to remove the original bushings for the upper shock mounts because the bolts were cross threaded and coarse thread all thread.
Had new bushings made and welded in by a local machine shop friend. Yes, the detail for the original upper shock lock washer in the outer portion was missed. Oh well.

After boiling in transmission fluid I got the Pistons to come out and the original cylinders had some minor pitting. I honed the pits clean and found some rubber kits on eBay.

Did a cleanup on the steering box. You can see these boxes are date coded like most of the mechanical parts are. Mine is dated 9/54 which makes it 2 months prior to production of the truck (11/54). It is stamped on the flat area where the tube meets the casting.

Degreased in parts washer, glass beads for general cleanup, masked the seal surfaces and used a mild abrasive on entire box for adhesion and followed with a satin black powder coat.

Plater has hardware at the moment.

Paper gaskets don't seem to be easy acquire. May have to make one.

And 17.7.54 [July, 17th 1954] date of molding or cast; cool

Assuming you are talking about on the end of the shaft...it was in great shape. The box obviously has low miles on it. The entire front end was in good shape just old and neglected. I am even restoring both tie rods and drag link because they are tight and smooth.

It was time to make another stab at progress and prepping the already completed messed up welding seemed moving backwards but it's the right direction. I removed all of the rest of the misc hardware and bolts still in the under side. Since the truck is going to be blended (at this point) I blasted the new metal and the underside only.

I would never agree to this set up for a customer. Blasting a bus is the most extensive type of blasting with all the cross members and blind areas. Then add a single cab it has a twice the cross members. A rotisserie is always required when we shoot the underside but for my situation and being I own the business I bent my own rule. Needless to say it was not fun but, my main man AJ did it without one complaint.

It's unfortunate that the whole left side will have to be removed in order to index the gate holes properly. I Removed all the green lacquer primer and once all the blasting was complete the entire underside and all replacement metal was applied with phosphoric acid. This is a step most commonly messed up on. The general thought is to blast metal and quickly cover it with epoxy. The problem is epoxy dries hard as nails with in its overcoat window of typically 72 hrs. So once it dries it needs to be sanded vigourasly to get your sandable primer to adhere. With the business I am in and the amount of high traffic work we do, we usually find that the professionals do the steps the way we profess to. Blast to white metal > apply phosphoric acid > metal work stage (cut grind weld) > chemical clean and prep > apply epoxy primer > directly on wet epoxy apply sandable primer > do filler and skim coats. If you disagree just read the spec sheets made by the manufactures of the chemicals.

The worst part ever... Phosphoric acid application.

I can keep going at any point. The fact that it has all blue removable panels and they are all in relatively good shape it will look the part.

I'm sure it will look killer either way. I expect it will be side by side with my '55 soon. I think your single has more blue paint on it though....
