Great looking job John, I am so looking forward to seeing it in person.
On a side note, I worked at a shop & the boss used to work at a restoration shop that did all metal work, no fillers. The guys in the shop used to call lead workers butchers. |
I still want to do some of the body work with lead, but not all of it. I have never actually done that kind of filling so it will be another learning curve for me.
Most of the filling will be done with modern body fillers otherwise it might be another 10 years before I finish this thing. <G> _________________ Later,

I would love to help with that. You are just a little too far for a day trip. Tempting..... _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

Come down for a weekend Henry. I will get the gang together and we will have SledFest 3. We have a guest room at the house, a BBQ grill will plenty of LP, and a cold fridge. _________________ Later,

Hey it is just as cold at my end of town as yours, BBQ? If I even mentioned this idea to the Mrs. she would say your car needs the work & it was nice to offer up your help. This sounds like a job for the spring/summer. I should be on the road by then. Like I said tempting. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

Sounds like you need to plumb some gas out to the garage, and get some heat going in there John. It does make a difference on working on stuff, when you can take your Carharts off and work in a shirt.
But then, I should talk, as I need to get off my own butt, and get some stuff done on my own stuff.
How are you doing the chrome strip above the side opening (where the side glass would butt up to)? _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Have heat...both propane and electric. I can get it comfortable out there. Just need to make the time. Going to try to get some stuff done out there tomorrow, I think.
As for the trim strip above the window opening, I am planning on cutting a piece of steel for that. Maybe stainless and then polish it or maybe just mild steel and then get it chromed. I haven't decided if I am going to try cutting a straight piece and then shrinking/stretching it to get the curvature or making a template and then digitizing it so I can cut it on the waterjet. Will see where I end up when I get there. _________________ Later,

I always loved what Chrysler did on (I think was a 56) they had the stainless trim `pop`open with the door glass to keep the rain out. I have an old boss I keep in touch with & I will see if he has some stainless trim that might save some time for you. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

If you looked thru the pics of John's Sled, you'll notice there are no provisions for side glass. It may get some "side curtains", but no glass (door tops are capped). But, if you can find something similarly shaped to what he needs, I'm betting he'll take it and use it (might need to be modified to fit). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Going by John's custom square, his fasty will probably end up with power hardtop windows eventually. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

its not that hard, I found it easy. Well its no different to soldering I do other than its on a bigger scale and manipulating with a paddle and files.
Its certainly a lot easier to shape the bog imo. _________________ The best of VW engine development!

Still working on it...just little things like pounding out the dents in the stainless trim and stuff. It has been too child's to get out in the garage. Warmer weather is finally here so watch for more significant updates soon. _________________ Later,

Have started chipping away at the Sled To-Do list again. I got all of the welding and grinding and bumping done on the front fenders. A couple of days ago I acid etched the inner surface...
then I broke out the MasterSeries...
and got a couple of coats on the inside surfaces of the fenders.
Next step on them is to acid etch the outers and then got all the surfaces in a coat of epoxy primer. Then they will be ready for the final mud work and finishing.
I do need to drill the trim attachment holes to the right size on both fenders before shooting the epoxy.
Progress.....slow for sure, but progress. _________________ Later,

I got the front fenders and the hood in epoxy sealer today.
I have a little bit of work to do on the underside of the hood tomorrow and then I can bolt them back on and start slinging mud....at least on the front third of the car.
I need to do a little more welding and grinding on the dash and doors before I can get those in epoxy. And then there is still a bunch of work on the rear fenders to do. _________________ Later,

Nice progress John. Looking good. Keep that up, and it won't be long until you'll be doing the "rear half" of the car. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Funny you should ask....
I took the day off today and got my 66 Squareback ready for winter storage and took her over to a friend's shop to spend the salt season. This frees up a bunch of space in my own garage/shop to work on the Sled over the winter. Going to get out there tomorrow and do some clean up and re-arranging so I can get back at it. It has been too long.
Stay tuned... _________________ Later,
